- "Do you see it now? Everything has gone off its proper course. No one else can bring order back to the world. My way is the only way to restore perfection..."
- ―Kale
Kale is a character and the main antagonist of Magical Starsign. He is a powerful magician who originally came from Kovomaka, formerly a student of Miss Madeleine at Will-o'-Wisp Academy. Kale and his subordinate Chard command the astro pirates.
Profile
Kale is a very standoffish, mysterious, and commanding person with an apparent messiah complex. He will use people to reach his goals with little thought of the consequences, going so far as to sacrifice his own allies. He is very devoted to his mission, against all reason, and is unfortunately extremely effective. Some allege that Kale was a good-natured student and civil servant, but lost hope in mankind after seeing how violent and incompetent it was.
Regarding his ideology, he is said to be one of the two mages recorded in history to have read the Book of the Darned and survived, the other mage being Madeleine. As presented throughout the story, his ideology shares similarities with the concepts of death and reincarnation, as written by Craaken. The book wrote of the larva Shadra eventually emerging to eat the sun, destroying the universe and rebirthing it anew. Kale is shown to fixate upon the universe’s end in particular. Motivated by his disdain towards mankind, Kale takes the imminent death of the sun to an extreme and works to accelerate the universe’s end by awakening Shadra early. It is likely that those in high command within his forces, such as Fowler and the pirate king Chard, share a similar disdain.
Kale's body is gray[a] and thin, with most of his face being concealed by long blonde hair and a moustache. The only distinguishable feature of his face is a single blue eye. For clothing, Kale wears a baggy moss-colored hat and a muffler scarf of the same hue. His choice of clothing is green robes made up of several fabric strips, making them appear severely torn. He also wears a torn red cloak over top of his robes.
Boss
Kale's starsign will be the opposite of the protagonist's, giving him either the light starsign with an aura during the day, or the dark starsign with an aura during the night. In battle, he fights alongside the gummy giant.
With the light sign, Kale can cast the front and back row versions of crystal laser, whereas with the dark sign, he can use blood money and dazzle darts. Additionally, despite being tied to a single starsign, Kale can cast spells from the five main attributes. These are: falcon dive from wind; gravel pounder from earth; briar patch from wood; heat fondu from fire; and absolute zero from water.
Kale also possesses the neutral spell celestial swap, allowing him to control the alignment of the planets to his advantage; he will use this spell more variably than most other enemies, and is capable of triggering orbit's end. He has the unique neutral spell insect bullets, which strikes all party members at random with the potential to lower their spirit.
On his turn, Kale can perform two successive actions. If he is defeated, the gummy giant will be unable to use its gummy sword skill.[1]

Biography
Early life
Long before the events of Magical Starsign, Kale graduated from Will-o'-Wisp as one of Miss Madeleine's students. He earned lots of respect at the academy, as he became highly educated in politics. Not only that, but his charisma and kindness convinced many people to align with his beliefs.
Around ten years ago, Kale was welcomed into the entourage of King Suspiro of Bena Rikashi on Puffoon. Suspiro was so impressed by Kale's public appeal and political knowledge that he earned his own place in the castle, and was even given a research lab on the east end of the city. As Suspiro's right-hand man, he helped strengthen the Space Police significantly. However, many citizens felt envious of Kale's rise to power and wanted their old customs to be preserved, harassing him to the point where he was nearly expelled from the castle. Despite this, Kale kept working hard for the nation, but slowly lost his faith in humanity as the public rallied against him.[2]
He studied more at Ambergris Preparatory School on the planet Cassia,[3] where he obtained Craaken's Book of the Darned.[b] From the book, he learned many esoteric things about the Baklava solar system, including the etherealization process and Nova's occupation within the sun. Kale also read about a larva named Shadra, who fed off of magic energy and lived on the dark planet of the same name. The planet Shadra occupied the sun's interior as well, but in a dimension parallel to Nova. According to Craaken, the larva was prophesized to destroy the universe by devouring the sun when it completed metamorphosis. Afterwards, it would give birth to a new sun, and in turn produce a new universe. To Kale, mankind was no longer competent enough to keep the Baklava system alive. He believed himself to be the only one capable of fulfilling Craaken's prophecy, and so plotted to accelerate Shadra's metamorphosis to annihilate and renew the universe.
Kale continued to search for ways to reach Nova, and then find a way into Shadra's dimension. Craaken's book taught of the ancient yogart gurus' ability to astral project into the sun on command, but it also identified a teleportation device called the Stone Stage, located at Shishkebab Cavern on Razen. In order to go through with this plan, Kale seized control of the Space Police with the help of its fighting instructor, Biek Fowler, making them completely disobedient to King Suspiro's authority. Kale then disclosed his plans to Suspiro, who spent several days trying to change his mind, to no avail. As his scheme unfolded, Kale traveled across Baklava to confide in Rogan Josh, Parfait, Principal Biscotti, and Miss Madeleine. To some, he expressed his views on the worthlessness of life, while others were told about the sun's dark secrets.
Some time later, Kale and Fowler joined forces with Master Chard of the astro pirates. Chard would be in charge of abducting magicians across the Baklava system, keeping them locked inside Shishkebab Cavern until the eventual voyage to Nova. Kale's intent was to bring the kidnapped magicians with him to the dark planet, have them crystallize from its ambient gummy fumes, and offer their magic and life force to Shadra in its larva form. It was also around this time when Kale created the odd beetle with Suspiro's approval, which he raised to guard the Couscous Ruins.
Magical Starsign
Three months ago on Kovomaka, the protagonist and their classmates overheard a conversation between Biscotti and Madeleine. Biscotti had received word of Kale's troublesome actions on Puffoon, and how he was using the astro pirates to carry out his evil deeds. In hopes of stopping Kale, Biscotti sent Madeleine off to Puffoon. After three months of absence, her concerned students took it upon themselves to find Madeleine, hijacking Will-o'-Wisp's secret stash of rockets and blasting off into outer space.
After the protagonist, Mokka, and Lassi left Cassia, Kale was seen approaching the Stone Stage, and before him laid an unconscious Miss Madeleine. A pirate otter then ran up to the stage, warning Kale of Chard's defeat at the students' hands. Kale responded with amusement, though wished for the students to be kept at bay for the time being. Kale would not be seen again until the party, now reunited with Chai and Pico, arrived at Shishkebab Cavern while chasing Sorbet. They watched her bring Celadon to Kale and Chard, hoping he would be a sufficient sacrifice for Shadra. Kale rejected Sorbet's dubious offering, exiling her from the Stone Stage. Using his own magic with Razen's energy, Kale triggered the etherealization process and warped himself, Chard, Madeleine, and his underlings into the sun.
During their quest to find the five millennium gummies, the party visited King Suspiro on Puffoon to learn more of Kale's history, and how his mistrust in mankind came to be. They then ventured through Couscous Ruins and saw time-bent mirages of Kale and Madeleine, replaying their encounter from three months ago. In these mirages, Madeleine tried talking Kale out of sacrificing the Baklava system's magicians for Shadra, only to be captured and brought to the Stone Stage by his subordinates. The students' galactic chase eventually lead them to Nova inside the sun, but shortly after landing, they heard an explosion in the distance. Investigating the Phunnel Pit, they found that the astro pirates blew up a stairway connecting Nova and Shadra's dimensions to hinder their progress. Luckily, with the help of their friends from around Baklava, the team managed to use a secondary teleporter beneath Sparklin Palace and progress through Shadra. Fowler and Chard would both end their own lives in an effort to stop the students, but they continued to push onward.
Within the gummy-ridden Chromagar Cave, the students took down Shadra in its larva form and discovered Madeleine further in the cavern, barely clinging to life under a layer of gummies. Kale intervened and attempted to stop Madeleine's students once and for all, summoning the gummy giant to fight alongside him. Once Kale was defeated, he directed the party's attention to Shadra in its chrysalis form, proclaiming it would absorb everyone's magic and commence the apocalypse. As Shadra absorbed Kale, it emerged from the chrysalis and clashed with the party. They managed to defeat the sun-devouring moth and created a new light of rebirth, but were too late to save Miss Madeleine, who bid her students farewell as she passed away in a mass of rippling lights.
Trivia

- In the Japanese version of the game, Kale has two voice lines that were removed overseas. These are "You've come at last..." (来てしまったのか kite shimatta no ka) at the start of battle, and "So this is it...?" (ここまでか koko made ka) when defeated.
- Kale bears many similarities to Sesame Ashpot from the first game in the series, Magical Vacation. He has the power to create magic bugs, evidenced by the specimens in his laboratory and his insect bullets spell, which resembles Sesame's insect attribute magic. They also have similar physical traits such as blue eyes and dirty blonde hair; Sesame is even seen with a bushy moustache in his epilogue at the end of Magical Vacation. In Sesame's epilogue, it says he became an antiques researcher who published many papers, and modified Latte's body into a rocket before launching him off of Kovomaka, demonstrating his prestige and interest in outer space.
