The protagonist is the main character of Magical Starsign. They are a student at Will-o'-Wisp Academy on the planet Kovomaka, whose gender and starsign are chosen by the player at the start of the game. These choices determine certain aspects of other characters throughout the game, namely who confesses their love for them at the Starfall Festival, and the starsigns of Miss Madeleine and Kale. The hero is known as Galette, while the heroine is known as Financier.[1][a]

The male protagonist's design is also used for Mash Blanc, the main character of Knight of the Universe, which takes place in a separate continuity from Magical Starsign.

Profile

The protagonist is described as being rather quiet, but quick to take action and resolve any conflict.[2] Galette is characterized as a fearless lad with an adventurous spirit, whereas Financier is a mysterious girl with mastery over magic. Depending on the starsign the player chooses, the protagonist’s warmth or charisma serves as the glue that binds their classmates together.

The hero, or Galette, is a fit teenager with orange-brown hair and blue eyes. He wears a big white cap embroidered with his signature symbol, sporting a red upper-chest piece with decorated shoulder pads, as well as red forearm-length gloves. Along his lower chest is a diamond-patterned drape over his baggy, lowered-to-foot pants which are ornamented with red knots. His pants are further tucked into his shoes at the bottom.

The heroine, or Financier, is a fair girl with blonde hair and purple eyes. She wears a white cap with long points, donning a red bow over her chest, a white layered cloak with blue trim and red laces, a blue and purple diamond-patterned skirt, white knee-high boots with more blue shaft and purple soles, and similarly colored cuffs on her wrists.

Gameplay

The protagonist is the party leader in Magical Starsign whom the player assumes control of for the entire game, starting at level 1. When creating a new save file, their starsign can either be light or dark. The light starsign gains its aura when Nova emerges in the day, specializing in moderate damage, healing, supportive effects, and blinding enemies to reduce their accuracy. The dark starsign gains its aura when Shadra emerges at night, providing heavier damage, HP absorption, randomized stat changes, and sealing enemies' recovery by inflicting curse. Progression-wise, the protagonist's stat growth is the most balanced of every party member. The only difference between them is that the light sign learns its second spell at level 8, while the dark sign learns it at level 9.

Biography

Early life

The protagonist enrolled in Will-o'-Wisp Academy to learn about starsigns and how to cast magic. They were placed in Low Class B under the mentorship of Miss Madeleine, where they became close friends with their classmates Lassi, Mokka, Chai, Pico, and Sorbet.

Reason: Needs to be completed

One day at the academy, the protagonist's group overheard a conversation between Miss Madeleine and Principal Biscotti. Biscotti stated that Kale, a graduate of Will-o'-Wisp and her former pupil, was causing trouble on the wind planet Puffoon with his band of astro pirates. The students intervened when Biscotti ordered Madeleine to travel to Puffoon, but the teacher promised she would be fine. After class, she invited the six students to the meditation room, where she gave them a crash course on combat and how to utilize their starsigns. Madeleine left for Puffoon later that day, but to the students' concern, she was not heard from for three months.

When Lassi suddenly went missing, Chai and Pico alerted their friends, reporting that she talked about joining Madeleine in space. They deduced Lassi was looking for a rocket, which commenced a search around the academy. Accompanied by Mokka and Sorbet, the protagonist discovered a storage room with a climbing wall that led to a hidden room. This room contained the door to the heavens, who invited the protagonist to prove their skills by unleashing wild magic. In doing so, the door opened up, allowing the group to ascend to a hangar containing six rockets. Aboard one of them, Lassi activated a sequence that opened the roof and powered on her ship, launching her into outer space. The protagonist promptly boarded another rocket and took off, chasing Lassi until she collided with an asteroid belt, causing her to plummet to Erd.

After Magical Starsign

Around ten years later, the protagonist teamed up with the dwarves on Erd to turn Kahve Ruins into a gigantic radio telescope. This device picked up a faint signal in space, which motivated the protagonist to board Mokka, whom Lassi rebuilt into an incomplete new-model spaceship. Before taking off, Chai stowed away between Rocket Mokka's main engine and fuel tank, secretly joining his friends on a new journey beyond the Baklava solar system.[b]

Trivia

Concept artwork of the female protagonist
  • When casting an attack spell in the Japanese version, the hero shouts 食らえ Kurae (Take this!), and the heroine shouts 行くよ Ikuyo (Go!). Both of these voice lines were replaced with their support spell/healing item voice lines in localized versions.
  • According to Shinichi Kameoka, the female protagonist's design was inspired by the character Fujiko Mine from Lupin III.[3]
  • The female protagonist went through at least two redesigns before receiving her current one. The first design was supposedly rejected because her face looked too kind,[4] while the second was rejected for appearing too much like an adult. Other differences include the symbol on her hat and patterned cloth on her boots.[5] Similarly, the male protagonist had a design that was scrapped for its adult-like proportions.[6]

Nomenclature

Hero

The hero's name comes from galette, a round and crusty French cake. In the English localization's code, his name was mistranslated as "Garret", which was carried over to all European versions of the game.

Heroine

The heroine's name comes from financier (pronounced fee-nan-syeh), a small French almond cake. In European versions of the game, this was misinterpreted as financier, a person who manages finances.

Notes

  1. Because the game has a character limit of eight, the protagonist cannot be named "Protagonist" or "Financier" in the United States and European versions.
  2. In the English localization, this scene is changed to Lassi "[leaving] Baklava forever" aboard Rocket Mokka "in search of new worlds," when no such details exist in the original Japanese version. This change also contradicts the protagonist's epilogue segment, in which they can be seen flying the Rocket Mokka.
