"Last but not least, a student of (light/dark) magic whose warmth/charisma holds this ragtag group together."

The protagonist is the main character of Magical Starsign. They are semi-customizable, with the player choosing their gender, name and starsign (between light and dark) at the beginning of the game. The choices made will change certain aspects of other characters throughout the game; namely, the affinities of Kale and Madeleine. The hero is known as Galette, while the heroine is known as Financier.[1] They cannot actually be named "Protagonist" or "Financier" in English, as the game has an eight character limit.

The male protagonist makes an appearance in Knights of the Universe as Mash Blanc, a fire mage. He is integrated into the cast of Magical Vacation in place of that game's protagonist. He is also joined by Sorbet in this appearance.

Gameplay

The protagonist is the leader of the party in Magical Starsign, and cannot be removed from the party, making them unique among the other members. Their affinity will either be light or dark, depending on the player's choice when creating a save file. This choice will also influence when the protagonist receives their aura; if they have a light affinity, they receive it during the day, whereas a dark affinity receives it during the night.

In battle, the spells used with light affinity are primarily tailored for healing and defense, whereas dark affinity spells provide heavier damage and stat buffs. While nearly all level progression is the same between the two, the second spell is learned one level earlier at level 8 with a dark affinity than with a light affinity at level 9.[2]

Wild magic

The protagonist's wild magic with light affinity is a short, blinding white flair. This can be used at key locations to trigger events, and also causes gummy worms to retreat into their holes. With a dark affinity, visibility is briefly darkened. Like with light magic, this can be used to trigger events, but uniquely, it also causes gummy frogs to disappear.[2]

Profile

Personality

The protagonist is described as being rather quiet, but quick to take action and resolve any conflict.[3] Galette is characterized as a fearless lad with an adventurous spirit, whereas Financier is a mysterious girl with mastery over magic.[4][5] Depending on the starsign the player chooses, the protagonist’s warmth or charisma serves as the glue that binds their classmates together.[2][6][7]

In Knights of the Universe, Mash Blanc is a free-spirited and tempered boy whose head is often up in the clouds. However, he gets serious when faced with danger, and does what he can to aid his friends.[8]

Appearance

Galette is a young, thin boy with orange-brown hair and blue eyes. He wears a helmet-shaped cap embroidered with his signature symbol. He has an upper-chest piece with decorated shoulder pads, as well as forearm-length gloves. Along his lower chest is a decorated display over his saggy, lowered-to-foot pants. His pants are further tucked into his shoes at the bottom.

Financier is a young, thin girl with blonde hair and purple eyes. She wears a long, pointed cap embroidered with her signature symbol. She has an orange bow tie, and a winding shoulder garb over her skirt. She wears a pair of cloth bracelets and ankle-height tucked boots.[2]

Beginning the Journey

The party in class.

The protagonist attended Will-o'-Wisp Academy as a student, learning about magic and Starsigns. In this time, they met and created close bonds with a group of friends.

One day, while attending class, Pico asked the protagonist if something may have happened to Miss Madeleine, as she was late to class. Sorbet reminded the two that it was a common occurrence for her to be late, and that she might be finishing her lesson plan. The group continued to discuss the subject, until Lassi alerted everyone that she was coming. Madeleine stormed into the room, telling her students good morning. The class began to argue with her over the fairness of them being punished given she was always late to class, to which she promised to always be on time in the future.

The party eavesdropping on Madeleine and Biscotti.

During school that day, the protagonist, walking with Pico, Sorbet, and Chai, found Lassi and Mokka eavesdropping on Miss Madeleine and Principal Biscotti. Lassi turned around, and openly wondered what the faculty members were talking about. The party then overheard their conversation, including Biscotti's plan to send Madeleine to Puffoon, the wind planet, to deal with Master Kale, a once-student of hers, and a group of pirates and mages. The listening group broke into the room, questioning if Madeleine really was leaving, to which she assured them that they were not intended to hear those statements.

The Protagonist approaches Miss Madeleine.

After school the same day, Madeleine summoned the group to the school's meditation room. The group told the protagonist to talk to her in the back of the room. After the protagonist approached her and she answered some questions from the students, she taught them to fight and wield magic.

Three Months Later

Three months after Madeleine left the school on her elusive mission, the Protagonist was told that Lassi had gone missing. While Pico and Chai investigated, the Protagonist chose to either search for her alone, or be joined by Mokka. In the hidden room upstairs in the Academy, the Protagonist found Sorbet, who had discovered a stone ladder in the corner of the room. If he was not already with them, Mokka joined the Protagonist.

After climbing the ladder, the group was led to a room with a large door. After approaching, it awakened as a living being, the Door to the Heavens. It claimed that it could only let through to the heavens beings who display extraordinary power, magic of Light or Dark affinity. After instructing the Protagonist, they displayed their magic outwardly, signalling their worthiness. The door opened for the group, allowing them to proceed to the passage beyond.

The Protagonist in the academy's rocket.

Mokka detected footprints on the ground in the area, and said that they continued up the ladder at the end of the hallway. After climbing the ladder, the group was led to multiple rockets at the very top of the academy building. Pico and Chai caught up with the group at the same time. Lassi, inside one of the rockets, triggered it into ignition, opening the top of the school as a launchpad and sending herself into space, all while leaving her friends behind her unconscious in the rubble. The protagonist then got up and entered one of the rockets, following Lassi across space.

Arriving on Erd

An ant lion emerges from the sand.

After crash landing on an unknown planet's surface, the Protagonist awoke, being stranded with a broken rocket in the middle of a sandstorm. They found Lassi, who was unconscious nearby. She asked for Kovo Water from her rocket, and got up once the Protagonist gave it to her. After recounting the events and her confusion to the Protagonist, Lassi joined the party. After seeing that her rocket was out of commission, Lassi came to the realization that the two were not on the wind planet.

Directionless, the two moved north. They were blocked along the path by a thicker section of the sandstorm that made it impossible to progress. After using her wind magic, Lassi was able to eliminate the storm entirely. Cheering at her abilities, Lassi failed to realize that behind her, a large creature had emerged from the sand. After defeating the ant lion, the two continued to move upward.[2]

Knights of the Universe

Mash and his friends in battle.

In this continuity Mash Blanc and his classmates went on an expedition to find Vanilla Nighthawk and her magic brigade, who were investigating an alien life form of prophesy dubbed The "Sheep". However, as they neared The "Sheep"'s crash site, Souffle Sherbet failed to detect Vanilla's voice. The group then encountered The "Sheep", and Vanilla's brigade was nowhere to be seen. The "Sheep" proceeded to fire a laser at Sorbet, but she quickly recovered when Mash went to check on her. Pistachio Maplewood, Cider Rainbow, and Arancia Scorenote unleashed powerful magic upon the alien being, though it was not effective in the slightest. As it attacked all the students apart from Mash and Sorbet, the latter feared that if she did not take action, everyone would die. Mash tried holding Sorbet back, when Souffle suddenly emerged from the debris and called forth Kerendu the enigma king.[2]

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

The male version of the protagonist appears in the game as sticker #627. Instead of using his canonical name, he is simply called "Boy".[9] His effect type may be a reference to his appearance in Knights of the Universe, where he is depicted as a fire mage.

Trivia

  • The names Galette and Financier are found in the code of Magical Starsign, though most localized versions mistranslated them, including examples such as Garret, Financière, Financy, Bankier, etc.
  • When casting an attack spell in the Japanese version, the hero shouts 食らえ Kurae (Take this!), and the heroine shouts 行くよ Ikuyo (Go!). Both of these voice lines were replaced with their support spell/healing item voice lines in localized versions.

Nomenclature

The hero's name is derived from galette, a round French cake. Similarly, the heroine's name comes from financier, a small French almond cake.

The hero's name in Knights of the Universe, Mash, is shared with the name of the male protagonist from Magical Vacation. It is possibly derived from marshmallow, a confectionary made from sugar and gelatin. His surname, Blanc, means "white" in French.
