Detective Beignet, known in Japan as Tsunkado, is a character in Magical Starsign. He is a Space Police officer who patrols Cassia.
Profile[edit | edit source]
Personality[edit | edit source]
Beignet is known for his integrity, compassion, and selflessness, but can be pretentious with his heroism. He is oblivious to the Space Police's true motives, but sometimes picks up clues and questions their actions. He has a high sense of justice, genuinely wanting to help anyone in need, differentiating him from the rest of the SP. This is also true when he defended the party from Biek Fowler.[1]
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Beignet wears a traditional violet jumpsuit, red shoulder pads, a gray bracer glider, and boots, which are commonly worn amongst the Space Police. He has pale skin, short black hair, thick eyebrows, and blue eyes.[1]

Magical Starsign[edit | edit source]
The protagonist and Lassi first met Beignet at Port Pescato on Cassia, which had suddenly been frozen over. The local otters begged for Beignet to deal with the hermit lab, who they believed was associated with the planet's freezing. Beignet, however, said his duty was to patrol Mandarin Beach for monsters, and that dogs were out of his jurisdiction. After much hijinks, the duo, and later Mokka, found Chard of the astro pirates to be responsible. They defeated him and destroyed his ice machine in Dragon God Cave, causing it to malfunction and thaw out Cassia. Beignet found the party washed ashore, and brought them back to Pescato where they were praised by the villagers. Beignet warned that the astro pirates were abducting magicians across the Baklava solar system, to which Lassi wondered if Miss Madeleine was taken amidst their scheme. Before leaving, Beignet suggested the students consult the Space Police at their headquarters on Puffoon, confident they could bring the pirates to justice.
While searching for the aquarino, an item that could make their rocket resistant to Razen's fiery atmosphere, the students returned to Pescato. Space Troopers prevented them from entering the town, until Beignet intervened and welcomed them in. However, the Troopers aggressively pushed Mick aside, to which Beignet helped him back home while the students followed. He explained how he reported the astro pirates' activities to the Space Police HQ, as they were gathered near Nata de Coco Door, but the deployed squad refused to heed his orders. The group concocted a plan, wherein Beignet distracted the Troopers while the students snuck into Nata de Coco. Spotting pirate otters hacking away at thick foliage, the students were suddenly challenged to a battle by Chard, with Beignet exclaiming he would fetch reinforcements. Once Chard was defeated and Beignet returned with his squadron, a Trooper mistakenly referred to him as "Master Chard", which Beignet questioned. The trooper corrected himself after being hit in the back twice by another trooper, and called for Chard's arrest. All four of them cornered Chard as one of them called for reinforcements from Pescato West Unit, requesting an armored cruiser to arrest him. When the cruiser arrived, Chard grab hold of the ladder himself and was taken away. Chard hid away in the Frog Pot at Mandarin Beach, ordering the surrounding five troopers to lock up Beignet, calling him an eyesore.
Surely enough, Beignet was detained by his own allies and imprisoned within Shishkebab Cavern on Razen. With the aid of Rogan Josh, the students found him there alongside several abducted magicians, proving that the Space Police and astro pirates were truly working together. After the students took down Gil Mudflap, Rogan Josh snagged his jail key and freed everyone in the caves. Beignet and Rogan Josh subsequently met up with their companions at the Stone Stage, where Kale and Chard had warped into the sun with Miss Madeleine moments prior. Luckily, no one was injured thanks to Celadon's barrier magic, so the group returned to Paella's lodge. With Semolina, disguised as Farina, among the magicians who were locked up, Beignet safely escorted her back to Tropica Village on Gren. Unfortunately, the real Farina had set Gren ablaze in order to avenge Semolina, whom she thought was dead. Beignet quickly paid the students a visit at Ambergris Preparatory School soon thereafter, urging them to resolve the problem.
Later on, the Space Police and astro pirates commenced an assault on Razen. A unit of Space Troopers swarmed and barricaded Paella, though a reluctant Beignet sneakily let the students in, encouraging them to defeat their vicious cybersaurus. Once the unit was defeated with the help of Parfait, the students prepared to leave Paella, when they were suddenly approached by Beignet. He warned them not to exit the village as Biek Fowler appeared, calling Beignet out for his treachery. Sorbet volunteered to hold Fowler off, exclaiming she had no reason to return to Kovomaka with her classmates. As Fowler prepared to ram into the group with his glider, Beignet leapt in front of them and took the blow. Fowler proceeded to taunt Beignet for his fragility despite wearing dwarven armor, to which Brie Pourri soared in and flew the students up to Condimen Tower with her magic.[1]
