Starsign Variable
Gender Female (implied)

Shadra is the final boss of Magical Starsign. She the third of three bosses fought at Chromagar Cave on Shadra, and the matured giant larva.

Profile

In her first form, Shadra is a massive three-segmented moth with pink and green patterns across its body. She will change her color scheme in order to reflect her current starsign, with dark affinity being the default. When she transitions into her second form, she becomes a large four-legged monster with cyan horns, and a massive, spherical, red lower body with spikes protruding.

Boss

During the battle with Shadra, Mokka will appear to be fainted, though he is still able to cast and spellstrike his magic, guard, reflex guard, and use items.

In her first form, Shadra can have any of the five main starsigns, and switches between them every three turns. Despite being tied to a single starsign per switch, Shadra can use spells from every sign other than light and dark at any time. These are: falcon dive from wind, gravel pounder from earth, briar patch from wood, heat fondu from fire, and absolute zero from water. She possesses the neutral spell celestial swap, allowing her to change the position of the planets; Shadra will use this spell more variably than most other enemies, and may aligning the planets to trigger orbit's end. She can also use the skill scale, which does very little damage to the entire party, but has a chance to completely drain the magic points of its targets.

When Shadra's hit points are reduced to 40% or less, she will assume her second form. Her stats increase slightly, and her starsign will be the opposite of the protagonist's, giving her either light with an aura during the day or dark with an aura during the night. Similar to the previous phase, she can still use spells from either light or dark regardless of what her current starsign is, and retains the spell celestial swap. She can cast the light spells paradigm shift, which hits up to six random targets with a chance to reduce defense, and prism barrier, negating damage dealt from the party's physical or magical attacks. She has the dark spell big crunch, dealing damage to every party member and can reduce spirit. She also has the skill stabby fork, which strikes a single party member.[1]

Translation: A sun-devouring insect. They say it will rebirth the universe, but its true nature is shrouded in mystery. It is the most powerful monster in the whole universe.

History

Shadra is a creature of prophecy whose existence was thoroughly studied by the late archwizard Craaken. According to what Craaken had written in the Book of the Darned, Shadra fed on magic gummies produced in Chromagar Cave on the planet Shadra, her namesake, as a larva. Using the magic as nutrients, the larva would metamorphosize into a moth and proceed to devour the sun of the Baklava solar system, annihilating the entire universe and everything within it. Shadra would then give birth to a new sun, in turn producing a completely new universe.[2]

Several thousands of years later, a magician from Kovomaka named Kale was nearly expelled from the Bena Rikashi palace by its citizens, having befriended King Suspiro and quickly risen to power. Kale eventually read through the Book of the Darned at Ambergris Preparatory School, a cram school on Cassia founded by Craaken, and learned of the universe's impending destruction by Shadra. Now keen on wiping out the malevolent, irredeemable people of Baklava, Kale planned to accelerate Shadra's metamorphosis and usher in the apocalypse. He took control of Chard's astro pirates and the Bena Rikashi Space Police, ordering them to abduct magicians from across the galaxy and bring them to the Stone Stage, a gate in Razen's Shishkebab Cavern which led to the sun. Miss Madeleine of Will-o'-Wisp Academy, among several other magicians, were taken prisoner by Kale's pawns.

Magical Starsign

After not hearing from Miss Madeleine for three months, her students set off into outer space to look for her. They learned of Shadra and Kale's schemes throughout their journey, soon arriving at her dwelling in Chromagar Cave. Taking Shadra down in her larva form, the students proceeded to defeat Kale and his gummy giant, upon which Shadra absorbed him into her chrysalis. They then found Madeleine encased in gummies, wherein she told them to complete Shadra's metamorphosis by offering some of their magic. Surely enough, she emerged as a matured moth to attack the group, and assumed another form once she was weakened. Madeleine's students ultimately vanquished Shadra, to which she erupted into a bright light that enveloped the sun. Observers exclaimed it was a light of rebirth cast by the students, who saved their world from the brink of destruction.

Trivia

  • Shadra is the only boss in Magical Starsign to have multiple phases, and to wield more than two magic starsigns during battle. For this reason, she is the only enemy in the bestiary marked with the neutral starsign.
  • Shadra has thin antennas like most female saturniid moths.

Nomenclature

Her name comes from shade, referring to her occupation of the dark planet.
