Concept artwork of the four planes explored in Magical Vacation

Realms, planes, and dimensions, are concepts in the Magical Vacation series.

Profile

Planes are layered self-contained worlds that overlap each other across multiple dimensions, comprising the whole universe. A plane is produced whenever a concept is brought into existence, as well as a magic attribute and spirit representative of that concept. For example, the Fire Plane (or Fire Realm) and fire spirit were produced from the conceptualization of "fire". In a more esoteric sense, planes can be coequally perceived as stars in the sky, the soul's flame, and the future self, which is understood as equating an individual to the universe in its entirety.

There are multiple ways to move between planes. These include warp magic, an advanced spell that only the most powerful magicians can cast; etherealization, the process by which matter temporarily becomes pure light energy; technology equipped with a magic power generator, such as the magic bus and Will-o'-Wisp Academy's summoning machine; or bending space to create a rift between planes, which is achieved by exerting strong higher-dimensional PSI energy.

List of realms

Realms in the series

Material Realm

The Material Realm (物質のプレーン Busshitsu no Purēn, Material Plane) is where the planets of the Baklava solar system are located, including the planet Kovomaka, Kovomaka Kingdom, and Will-o'-Wisp Academy.

Light Realm

The Light Realm (光のプレーン Hikari no Purēn, Light Plane) is a world rich with culture and history, enveloped in a natural light that weakens beings of darkness such as enigmas.

Dark Realm

The Dark Realm (闇のプレーン Yami no Purēn, Dark Plane) surges with the power of shadows that brings together the extremes of nature, from deep marshes to raging volcanoes.

Abyssal Realm

The Abyssal Realm (死のプレーン Shi no Purēn, Death Plane) is a desolate, lifeless world which governs the universe's laws of death and reincarnation.

Sun

The sun (太陽 taiyō) of the Material Realm's Baklava system is actually two suns, which overlap each other in parallel dimensional spaces. One sun contains Nova the light planet, while the other contains Shadra the dark planet. They switch positions relative to the universe's balance of magic, creating a sort of day-night cycle in Baklava.

Other realms

Water Realm

The Water Realm (水のプレーン Mizu no Purēn, Water Plane) is home to the water people, as well as a country of frogs where Cabernet's Master Frog came from. This world was invaded by enigmas at some point, causing the colossal water people to split into smaller bodies and scatter across various realms. Blueberry Lakeside began visiting the Water Realm at the age of 7 with her grandmother, discovering her ancestral ties to this world and learning its ancient Aquarim Language. After she graduated from Will-o'-Wisp, Blueberry ventured to the Water Realm to befriend the remaining water people.

Fire Realm

The Fire Realm (火のプレーン Hi no Purēn, Fire Plane) uses ignis coins as a form of currency. It also has its own magic academy, where a beloved magician passed away surrounded by his array of disciples. The protagonist began a long journey across twenty realms, starting in the Fire Realm, if they defeated the final boss as a dark mage.

Wind Realm

The Wind Realm (風のプレーン Kaze no Purēn, Wind Plane) is where the first country of felins was founded before they migrated to other realms. A special mineral called wind stone (風の石 kaze no ishi), which is used to craft winged studs, can only be found here. This world was also home to a magician known as the Archmage of the Wind Realm, who died and reincarnated in Star Cavern Arko as a star.[1] The protagonist's journey ended in the Wind Realm after leaving their legacy across many countries and landmarks, where they passed away at the age of 87.

Wood Realm

The Wood Realm (木のプレーン Ki no Purēn, Wood Plane) belongs to the first country of canins.

Thunder Realm

The Thunder Realm (雷のプレーン Kaminari no Purēn, Thunder Plane) is where electron stickers are produced.

Sound Realm

The Sound Realm (音のプレーン Oto no Purēn, Sound Plane) used to be the home of marcher archer, until it was banished for being evil and fusing with an enigma.

Rainbow Realm

The Rainbow Realm (虹のプレーン Niji no Purēn, Rainbow Plane) is a secret world only accessible to a faction called the Rainbow Emissaries (虹の使者 Niji no Shisha), who can warp to it by wearing the magic set.[2]

Trivia

  • When designing the settings of Magical Vacation, background artist Kōji Tsuda aimed to express director Nobuyuki Inoue's isekai-style worldbuilding alongside Shinichi Kameoka's characters to their fullest potential on the Game Boy Advance, wanting the game to have a fantasy world like never before.[3]
