Cidre Rainbow is a party member in Magical Vacation and a character in Uchū no Kishi. 14 years old, he is an artist and poet enrolled in Will-o'-Wisp Academy who uses the beauty spirit. He has spent most of his life creating works of art, having been taught by his late mother, and recently began teaching his younger cousin Souffle how to draw. When Cidre and his classmates arrive at the Valencia Beach Seaside School, they are attacked by enigmas and transported to the Light Plane. Cidre bands together with Ganache, Candy, Olive, and Cabernet for a time, but after being taken to the Dark Plane, he refuses to follow them in favor of waiting for Miss Madeleine. Although haunted by childhood trauma, Cidre learns to take initiative and fight with his classmates by his side.

In Uchū no Kishi, which takes place in an alternate continuity after Magical Vacation, Cidre and some of his friends are accompanied by junior students Mash Blanc and Sugar Ronsard, tasked with joining Vanilla Nighthawk in her investigation of the "Sheep".

Profile

Cidre is a self-proclaimed realist with a finicky view on art, saying whatever is on his mind with little concern for how others will feel. Even though Cidre displays a lack of empathy for other peoples' feelings, he wishes to help others, but his self-doubt prevents him from taking supportive action; instead, he will wait for grown-ups to come to his rescue. He enjoys abstract painting and expressing his thoughts with poetic bravado, which his classmates find pretentious. His favorite food is wakenoshinnosu,[2] a specialty sea anemone dish in Kovomaka Kingdom.

Cidre has blonde hair, a small red hat, purple eyes, and a tanned complexion. His outfit consists of a red scarf, a yellow vest with big sleeves, as well as baggy pants of the same color. Two blue satchels are looped over his shoulders, a blue cape flows over his back, and he sports a pair of brown loafers.

Cidre is the youngest adolescent artist at the Magic School, and is overflowing with talent for poetry and drawing. He tends to make pretentious and sarcastic remarks that belie his youth, but his is a heart of childlike innocence. However, because he has a unique, logical thought process and aesthetic sense, his lack of cooperation is a flaw.

Biography

Early life

Cidre started drawing at the age of 2, in the footsteps of his mother. At 10, he held his first private art exhibition where he was showered in praise and called a child prodigy. However, Cidre frequently criticized other peoples' art regardless of how much praise they received, and was once kicked out of a gallery for condemning the art on display. Cidre would spend hours in his studio on his days off, though he never had a clear theme in mind and his brush rarely touched the canvas. He eventually began teaching his 7-year-old cousin Souffle, who turned out to be very talented, but when someone came to purchase one of her works, Cidre claimed he was the one who made.[3] Cidre continued to give Souffle lessons, but it seemed like she was teaching him more, as her free-spirited techniques began to change his outlook on art.

Some time before Magical Vacation, Cidre and his mother went to an art festival at Panaché Mountain (パナシェ山).[a] While his mother was focused on her ice sculpture, a blizzard swept through the festival that left the attendees stranded without food for four days. Cidre's mother went to look for help and did not return, and only her son made it home after rescuers arrived the day after.

Cidre and the others in the music room

Before leaving for camp at the Valencia Beach Seaside School, Cidre talked with Cassis, Olive, and Arancia in Will-o'-Wisp Academy's music room. They discussed rumors about students disappearing at Valencia Beach in previous years, though unlike his classmates, Cidre was in disbelief. He argued the academy would not allow students to camp there every year if it endangered their lives. Olive attempted to use Ganache's sister Vanilla as proof of the disappearances, as she abandoned Will-o'-Wisp three years ago upon returning from camp. Cidre considered going to Ganache for answers, but Cassis doubted he would open up about his family. The four students joined up with the protagonist shortly after, leaving the academy and boarding the magic bus with Cabernet.

Cassis and Cidre lost on the Light Plane

On the drive to Valencia Beach, Cidre improvised poems about the youthful freedom that was to come during the summer, saying they would be like the children who opened the doors to heaven. Lemon accused Cidre of parroting another artist's words, to which he proclaimed his poem was an original work. He spent most of his time at Valencia Beach near the cabins, creating more dramatic poems of the sea and evening sun. At dusk, Cidre gathered alty silver coins hidden in the sand, convinced they were currency used by an ancient civilization. Suddenly, creatures called enigmas began swarming Valencia Beach, warping the students away one by one and sending them to the Light Plane. When Cidre woke up on the Light Plane, he found himself with Cassis at the Ibense Crag. He attempted to ally with Cassis, until Chocolat cried for help in the distance, so Cassis ran off to look for him. Cidre would later team up with Cabernet, Olive, Ganache, and Candy in Gearava Village. When the protagonist and their party approached Gearava Village, they saw Cidre and his group walking through the mountains. A zaphropeak enigma leapt in under Equillekrew's orders to send the students to the Dark Plane, warping Cidre and the other four away.

At Rehikafu Swamp Edge on the Dark Plane, Ganache killed the zaphropeak and advised his classmates to find Chocolat and Sesame, who were also brought to the Dark Plane. Having never been to the swamp before, Cidre and Candy were skeptical, but Ganache was familiar with the area. He led the others east to Masalatea Village, where the protagonist and Café au Lait followed. Reaching Masalatea, Cidre opted to wait for Miss Madeleine and the protagonist's party to come rescue them. Ganache, however, told Cidre that staying behind would benefit his own plans. Meanwhile, the party talked with Cinnamon, who informed them Ganache's group was heading for the Enigma Forest. To the party's surprise, only Cidre stayed in Masalatea. He reprimanded the others for their overconfidence in facing the enigmas, refusing to go to Enigma Forest, to which Cassis said the students could not sit around and wait for the help of grown-ups any longer. Cassis believed everything happening was predetermined by Principal Biscotti, who had faith in the students, though Cidre did not budge. Overhearing a conversation between the students and a resident wolks, Cidre learned that Cinnamon had supposedly come down with ooze fever. Fearing for her health, Mace took it upon himself to find the curative ice seed in Gela Windhole. Cidre watched Mace take a boat to Ice Island, to which the party urged Cidre to join them and follow Mace. Refusing to leave the village, Cidre found the journey to be too risky, wishing for the party to die like his mother. Cassis tried convincing Cidre that unlike he and his mother, the students were strong and did not need to wait for help, but Cidre still refused to listen.

Progressing through Gela Windhole on Ice Island, the party eventually met up with Mace and defeated the hailcrab. After Mace stumbled out of the cave with the icy seed in hand, a dwarf called Quattro Formaggi arrived. He had taken Chocolat hostage earlier and was actually possessed by a Dab Hasnel enigma. Just as Quattro Formaggi unleashed his enigma form, he was struck with a beauty spell, revealed to have been cast by Cidre . The enigma warped away, then Cassis asked Cidre how he was feeling. Cidre seemed to have come to terms with his mother's passing, but sensed someone was watching the party from afar. He joined the party, taking the boat back to Masalatea Village to check on Cinnamon. The group soon uncovered Ginger's ploy to keep Mace away from Cinnamon, so Cinnamon abandoned the village in search of Mace. Cidre advised the students to depart as well, and set off for the felin village south of Rehikafu Swamp.

Arriving in Tapiocatea Village, the party heard from the local felins of how sparrows were blocking routes in the nearby forest, and could only be moved by wolks whistling techniques. They entered the house of Musk and Cocoa, who informed them Ganache and his group had passed through the village earlier. Musk also told the students that Ganache's group learned to move black-feathered sparrows from a young wolks, leaving behind a memo for them to read. The party proceeded to Riginio Jungle, reuniting with Nectar whom they previously met on the Light Plane. Musk and Cocoa followed them into the thicket, wherein Musk realized the dodos in Nectar's care were really people cursed by enigmas, and that he had used his Fennel to kill them for their medicinal blood. Sesame was present as well, having helped Musk for saving him after the Valencia Beach incident. Once Sesame fled the jungle, Café au Lait suggested the party return to Musk and find out how to cross Kumuyamuto Desert. In doing so, they reached Zundoko Pit at the desert's edge and discovered Mace hiding within. As Mace announced his plans to help the putties in Basorimo Village, he explained to them the whistling technique to move sparrows. To the students' surprise, only Cidre was able to whistle the correct way, though he admitted it was because he had experience herding chickens in elementary school.

After Magical Vacation

Cidre painting pictures of his adventures

Cidre painted countless pictures depicting his affairs at the Seaside School, passing down stories of what happened there for generations to come.[4]

Uchū no Kishi

Cidre and Souffle searching for Vanilla

In this continuity, Cidre and Souffle accompanied their classmates to Eldile Plains, where Vanilla and her brigade where investigating an alien life form dubbed the "Sheep." When Arancia and Cidre asked if Souffle could detect Vanilla's voice, Souffle exclaimed she could hear nothing. The group quickly arrived at the "Sheep"'s crash site, so Cidre, Arancia, and Pistachio attacked it with their magic. However, the "Sheep" was barely damaged, and it wiped out most of the group with a surge of energy. Souffle emerged from the debris, to Mash Blanc and Sugar Ronsard's shock, and called upon Kerurendu to fight the "Sheep".

Trivia

  • Cidre's favorite food, wakenoshinnosu, is the original local name of ishiwakeisoginchaku, a variety of anemone eaten along the Ariake Sea. In the Magical Vacation universe, it is considered a rare "fabled" dish as a result of bay pollution.[5]
  • Cidre's mention of herding chickens in elementary school contradicts established worldbuilding, as Kovomaka Kingdom does not have elementary, middle, or high school systems. This is further addressed in MagiVaca ni Matsuwaru Uwasa.[6]

Nomenclature

His name comes from cidre, meaning "cider" in French, an alcoholic beverage made from fermented crushed apples.
