"An anxious boy. Everyone says he has a strangely old-fashioned vibe."

Pistachio Maplewood is a party member in Magical Vacation. He is a lively yet cautious canin who attends Will-o'-Wisp Academy, specializing in wood magic and other unusual powers.

Profile

Pistachio is very worrisome and has an apparent inferiority complex. He constantly puts himself down, openly frets about his grades, and is deeply concerned over the well-being of others. He is also known for his cowardly nature and tendency to panic in the face of danger. Despite his disappointment with himself, Pistachio takes pride in his fluffy canin ears and tail. In Japaneese, he ends most of his sentences with a verbal tic, っぴ ppi, and his dialogue is written in Café au Lait Font when he feels discouraged or excited. He also speaks informally, using slang words such as オイラ oira instead of 俺は ore wa (I am).

Pistachio's eyes are navy blue, and his fur is brown and scruffy. Since his green trousers are too big for his legs, he wears them as a hat instead.[1] His baggy robes are of the same color and also have identical stitching on the sleeves' cuffs. Tied around his neck is a red scarf with yellow polka dots, and he wears big green shoes.

Gameplay

Pistachio joins the party before fighting Demice at Mimolette Forest in the Light Realm, starting at level 1 and wood magic level 2. He possesses the wood spirit, which is strong against the beast spirit, but weak to the insect spirit and dark spirit. His magic can cover single-target and square areas, with a chance to lower the opponents' spirit (magic defense).

From levels 1 through 39, the only stat increase he gets upon levelling up, aside from his usual HP and MP increases, is 1 point into agility. Once he reaches level 40, however, his stat allocation bias changes. His HP and MP will consistently increase by 4, and he earns 4 stat points when he levels up, which are randomly assigned to any of his stats (except MP%). This means that by the postgame, Pistachio will have the highest average stats of the party.

Outside of battle, Pistachio can find three gummy frogs when drinking from HP Pots for the first time. Frogs obtained this way do not count towards the report card, thereby not affecting the appearance of dark spirits or the rejection of love spirits. The frogs' colors are also affected by the player's report card grade: S grade is red, A grade is blue, and anything below is green.

Biography

Early life

Pistachio hailed from a small village where all the townsfolk knew his name, as he was famous for his abilities to read unopened envelopes, bend spoons with his mind, and make acorns fall out of thin air. Locals called his magic the work of a god, and word eventually reached Principal Biscotti, who scouted out Pistachio and invited him to enroll in Will-o'-Wisp Academy. The whole village said their good-byes to Pistachio as he and Biscotti left for the academy dormitory, throwing a celebratory party in his name. Freshly enrolled at Will-o'-Wisp, a conceited Pistachio started out as somewhat of a bully, but was quickly humbled when he realized he was the worst magician in his class. Pistachio tried to keep his failure secret from his parents, though they found out right away, and have insisted that he come home to take over the family business.[2]

After Magical Vacation

Professor Pistachio graduating from the academy

Pistachio continued to study hard, and after earning a doctorate from the Magic Academy, he wrote several books to propagate magic far beyond the continent.

Magical Starsign

Jonesy, whom Pistachio put in detention

Although he did not make a physical appearance in Magical Starsign, Pistachio was mentioned to be a professor at Will-o'-Wisp Academy by some students in his class, all of whom were given detention by him. The students blamed their detentions on Professor Pistachio for having a strict and unfair teaching style. In Japanese, a student named Jonesy commented on his annoying "ppi" tic and cowardly nature as seen in Magical Vacation.[3] In the English localization, however, this was changed to him having an evil laugh, even referring to him as a villain.[4]

A student named Russel also got in trouble with Professor Pistachio. In Japanese, he was given detention because he failed an assignment, complaining that it was unreasonable because Pistachio did not provide any examples.[5] In English, Pistachio punished Russel for not finishing his "hexonomics homework," which he found unfair for the same reason.[6]

Pistachio's name was brought up again by a boy named Diecast in Chocomilk Caves on the planet Shadra. According to Diecast, Pistachio and many others from Kovomaka were wizards of legend, which earned it the title of "the magic planet."[7]

Trivia

  • His hobby is reading.
  • Donuts are his favorite food.[1]
  • In the Japanese version of Magical Starsign, some of Pistachio's students are named after the Jack Russell Terrier dog breed. Jonesy is Jack (ジャック Jakku), Russell's name was unchanged (ラッセル Rasseru), and Terria is Terrier (テリア Teria).

Nomenclature

His name comes from pistachio, drupes encased in hard white seeds.

  4. Jonesy: "Detention AGAIN!? This is so lame. Professor Pistachio is such a villain! Even his laugh is evil... "Myeh myeh myeh!" That laugh bounces around in my head. And my head used to be such a quiet, empty place."

  7. Diecast: "Yeah... Some people call Kovomaka the magic planet because of it. You have Biscotti and Souffle Rainbow and Pistachio Maplewood... Ganache Nighthawk and his sister Vanilla... Those names are legendary to anyone who's studied even a little magic."
