Gyuuhi Ogura is a character in Magical Vacation. Formerly a planar geography teacher at Will-o'-Wisp Academy and old friend of Biscotti, he is a guide for those who find themselves lost on the Dark Plane.
Profile
Gyuuhi Ogura considers himself an expert on the universe and its secrets. His wisdom also extends to knowing everything about a person by simply looking at them. He also speaks with an archaic panache.
He has wrinkly skin, baggy eyes, and silver hair. Over his mouth is a long moustache, and most of his hair is kept up in a purple fez-like hat with a red checkered pattern. When Peabee had a human body, he wore a long purple surplice with red outlines along the sleeve cuffs, collar, and ephod. In his right hand, he wielded a golden staff decorated with rings and a red jewel. His current inchworm body is lumpy, green, and has short spots of hair on the tip of its tail.
Biography
Early life
Gyuuhi Ogura used to be a professor at Will-o'-Wisp Academy, where he taught the geography of other planes.[1] Before then, he and Principal Biscotti competed to see who could reach the lowest floors of Garam Masala, the Palace of Trials where archmagicians would put their abilities to the test.
When he was 280 years old, Gyuuhi Ogura retired from Will-o'-Wisp and somehow had his lower body replaced with an inchworm's. He had become an authority of magic, which he found to be mundane over time. He decided to live a hermitic lifestyle on the Dark Plane for the next two hundred years, serving as a guide for lost travelers. As for his old human body, rumor began circulating that it was kept in a science lab at the academy.
Magical Vacation
Shortly after warping to the Dark Plane, the protagonist and Café au Lait found Gyuuhi Ogura at the southwest end of Rehikafu Swamp Edge. Anjay sensed they were students of Miss Madeleine, and also learned of their persecution by the enigmas. He gave them a map of darkness so they could navigate the Dark Plane with ease, then advised they go north to Masalatea Village. The party could return to Gyuuhi Ogura throughout their adventure, wherein he gave them hints on where to go next.
Later on, the party could find Gyuuhi Ogura guarding the entryway in Garam Masala. He told the party of when he and Biscotti were magicians-in-training, and how they traversed Garam Masala to test their skills.
Trivia
- Despite having artwork depicting him with a human body, he is never seen like this in-game.
- Gyuuhi Ogura's staff resembles a shakujō, a ring-adorned polearm traditionally wielded by Buddhist monks.
- According to Shinichi Kameoka, Gyuuhi Ogura was originally going to be purely human, but director Nobuyuki Inoue found it uninteresting and wanted him to be a realistic butterfly larva with a human face. The second design grossed Inoue out, so he and Kameoka settled on Gyuuhi Ogura's current hybrid form.[2]
Nomenclature
His name comes from 求肥 gyūhi, rice paste, and 小倉 ogura, red bean jam.
