Profile
Personality
Ganache has difficulty coming to terms with his heritage of dark magic, as his family of dark warlocks tend not to be well thought of by those around them. He does not try to establish meaningful relationships with anyone for this reason, but he is more open about his emotions with Olive, who can read his heart with telepathy. Although Ganache is kind-hearted by nature, he has grown more reserved after his sister went missing.
Appearance
Ganache has green hair and purple eyes. Two tufts of hair stick out from his violet turban, and he wears a violet surplice with a cape and garment. His garment has orange and yellow arabesque patterning, outlined with red-orange trim, and he dons pink shoes with striped laces.
Biography
Early life
Ganache and Vanilla were descended from necromancers who lived in a country west of Kovomaka Kingdom. Although the practice of necromancy was abandoned, people were still opposed to dark magic, forcing the Nighthawks and their clan to keep their powers hidden in public.[1] Ganache grew to be ashamed of his bloodline, choosing to isolate himself from everyone except for Olive Tearclown and Cabernet Cheaptrick. Ganache was able to grow close to Cabernet, since his brother Chardonnay was dating Vanilla.
Three years before Magical Vacation, Vanilla returned to Will-o'-Wisp Academy after a trip to the Valencia Beach Seaside School, unaware that an enigma had fused into her heart. The effects of fusion caused Vanilla's emotions to spiral out of control, and she convinced herself that she was hated for having the dark spirit's blood. When Chardonnay tried to console her, she proclaimed power was her way of coping, bidding him and Cabernet farewell. Before abandoning the country altogether, Vanilla asked Ganache if she was strong enough to defeat Principal Biscotti in battle, then voiced her desire to bring Kovomaka Kingdom to ruin. Ganache confronted Biscotti and Miss Madeleine soon thereafter, in which Biscotti told him that Vanilla had not changed, but rather, her true self was beginning to emerge. Maddened by his words, Ganache accused Biscotti of belittling Vanilla's life. Around this time, Candy Mintblue enrolled in Will-o'-Wisp, inspired by magicians that saved her village from trolls a few years prior. When she met Ganache for the first time, he reminded her of those magicians and quickly fell in love. Ganache, however, did not reciprocate those feelings.
Two years later, Vanilla succumbed to the enigma possessing her, corrupting both her body and mind. As she began wreaking havoc on the kingdom, hundreds of soldiers, including Chardonnay, were deployed from the capital. Meanwhile at the academy, Cassis Lumberyard received word from the societal underground that Kovomaka had gone to war. Ganache ran off as Olive suddenly had a premonition, warning him that the situation was more dire than he thought. Vanilla slaughtered two hundred soldiers and destroyed several castles, until Biscotti fought her and sealed her inside Chiboust Castle. When the conflict ended, Chardonnay asked to be buried on a hill overlooking Chiboust Castle in his dying breath, realizing the monster was actually his lover.
Back in Ganache's hometown, he went to fetch well water for his elderly widowed neighbor as part of his daily routine. He never talked about Valencia Beach to the widow, but she found out when Candy carelessly mentioned it while following Ganache around.[2]
Magical Vacation
As the party boarded the magic bus in preparation for their trip to Valencia Beach, Miss Madeleine took attendance, quickly noticing that Ganache was absent. Olive volunteered to look for him, as did Candy, but Madeleine only allowed the former to go. Arriving at the riverbed off campus, Olive spotted Ganache playing his harmonica and called out to him. Ganache briefly mistook Olive's voice for Vanilla's, to which Olive sensed he was dwelling over his sister's disappearance. Although Ganache doubted that anything happened at Valencia Beach three years ago, Olive promised they could solve the mysteries surrounding Vanilla, then suddenly had a vision of the class disappearing at camp. Alerted by the vision, Ganache ran with Olive back to the magic bus before it departed for the Seaside School.
During free time later that evening, Ganache and Olive happened upon a cave at the beach's edge. The protagonist, Sesame, and other students stopped by as Ganache approached the cave, advising they stay away from the darkness that lingered within. Ignoring his warnings, the students ventured inside and returned to the campgrounds at dusk. Candy invited Ganache to the cabins and handed him a late birthday present, apologizing for being unable to deliver three months ago. Upon receiving his present, Ganache thanked Candy and promised to return the favor, then left before Candy could confess her romantic feelings. The protagonist met with Ganache and Cassis afterwards by the shore, learning the basics of combat and their classmates' proficiencies. Ganache told the protagonist that something bad was afoot, advising they warn Lemon and Kirsche just in case. Unfortunately, his fears came true as enigmas suddenly swarmed the beach, warping the students away to another plane of existence. He fought back against a couple of enigmas that abducted Candy, and demanded Madeleine to tell him what was happening. Madeleine explained the enigmas to Ganache and the protagonist, but wondered how they were able to contact the Material Realm. Ganache proceeded to join a horde of enigmas, promising to Madeleine that he would rescue the class, and allowed himself to be warped to the Light Realm.
On his hunt for the students, Ganache wound up in the puppets' Oturan Village, soon meeting up with the protagonist, Arancia, and Pistachio. They explained how Kirsche was abducted by the enigma Volcanera in Forest Cave, fearing that his body may be used for fusion. Ganache theorized that the enigmas were planning to wear the students out in the Light Realm and make their hearts vulnerable; otherwise, they would have performed fusion immediately at the beach. The group ventured to a tunnel beneath a villager's house, where Kirsche was being tortured by Volcanera. Ganache ordered the enigma to stop, offering to become his fusion vessel instead. However, as Volcanera boasted his and Ganache's powers, Ganache cast a mijote spell that killed the enigma instantly. With Kirsche on the team, they opted to meet with Oturan Village's chief to gain access to Wetsomus Ruins, and Green Tea Village by extension. They consulted chief Chiffon and his granddaughter Mille-feuille, who promised to give them an ukuru's feather in the morning.
The next day, a puppet was found dead the village, the latest case in a series of homicides. As the townspeople grieved, the party met with Chiffon and Mille-feuille, to which Ganache asked that they be guided to the ruins. Arancia reprimanded his lack of sympathy, though Mille-feuille followed up on her promise and gave them an ukuru's feather. Ganache stated how the puppets were trying to drive the students out of Oturan, not wanting them to be caught up in the village's affairs. Mille-feuille guided them to the base of the ruins, where Tiramisu the innkeeper attempted to take her heart, hoping it could reanimate his broken brother Mousse. Luckily, the students arrived just in time, upon which Tiramisu fled to the floating ruins. Kirsche urged Mille-feuille to expose Tiramisu's serial crimes to the villagers, but she refused, stating the fate of her kin should not be affected by outsiders.
Reaching the end of Wetsomus Ruins and defeating the snowhair, the students were met by Tiramisu. While Mille-feuille asked to speak with Tiramisu in private, Ganache chose to part ways with his classmates, no longer wanting to involve himself with the puppets' problems. Mille-feuille then followed Tiramisu back to Oturan Village, as did the students while Ganache watched with disdain. At the ruins' base, Tiramisu secretly watched Mille-feuille dash to the village's inn, curious why she chose to follow him knowing it may cost her life. Just then, Ganache appeared to exclaim that Mille-feuille had a heart, threatening to kill Tiramisu if he were to endanger her. The puppet-murderer summoned his blade spirit, with Ganache summoning his dark spirit in response, ensuing a chase back to Oturan. Unfortunately, Tiramisu was struck by a dark spell, severely injuring him. Barely clinging to life, he met Mille-feuille and the students at the inn, prying his chest open so that his heart could be given to Mousse. After drawing his final breath, the party found Ganache outside, seemingly oblivious of Tiramisu's death. He swore he did not mean for the attack to be fatal before running away in a panic, though his classmates were sure he was holding back.
While exploring the Light Realm, Ganache soon arrived at Ufot Village. Candy, Olive, Cabernet, and Cider in were also there, but unbeknownst to the students, the enigmas' commander Equillekrew ordered for all of them to be taken to the Dark Realm. A zaphropeak suddenly warped Candy's group away, and just as it was about to leave, Ganache rushed in and got caught in the warping process. The five of them wound up in Spollacs Swamp and killed the zaphropeak, though luckily, Ganache was familiar with the area. They proceeded to Masala Chai Village and took a boat across the swamp, but Cider chose to stay behind and wait for Miss Madeleine to save him.
The next day in Tapioca Tea Village, Ganache's group met with Mace and learned to move gray-feathered ricebirds. Just as Ganache was about to embark, the other three caught up, with Cabernet remarking how quick he was to ditch his friends, much like how Chardonnay was treated before his passing. Candy mistakenly thought Chardonnay and Ganache were in a relationship, until Cabernet corrected her and exclaimed Chardonnay was dating Vanilla. As Ganache planned his next course of action, Cabernet professed they should defeat all the enigmas. Candy found such a feat to be impossible, when Cabernet suddenly theorized that his brother's death one year ago was no accident; rather, he was murdered. He speculated the culprit was an enigma, though Olive exclaimed vanquishing the enigmas out of revenge would prove futile, seeing as they could instantly regenerate. Ganache cut their conversation short, suggesting the four of them find enigmas and use them to warp back to the Material Realm.
Ahead in Eastern Forest, Candy lead Olive away and grilled her on her ability to read peoples' hearts. Olive admitted she knew very little of Ganache's plans, but confessed that his end goal was to rescue Vanilla, who was being held captive in a heavily-guarded castle. Candy was initially in disbelief, until Olive explained that by fusing with an enigma, Ganache could easily clear through the castle's guards. As Candy expressed her hatred for Olive, feeling as though she and Cabernet were dead weight in Ganache's scheme, something suddenly attacked them. Meanwhile, the boys took down a vicious Badaboom, but quickly ran to their companions upon hearing Candy shriek. They found Miss Madeleine with the party, watching over an unconscious Candy and Olive. Madeleine stated that Candy's heart had been sealed, then was interrupted by Chocolat crying for help in the distance. Ganache, his three companions, and Madeleine ran north to Mt. Morbier, but along the way, Candy and Olive mysteriously disappeared. After talking to a pyrite from Abos Village, Ganache and Cabernet trailed back to look for the girls, leaving Madeleine and the party to rescue Chocolat.
Elsewhere, Candy brought Olive to the entrance of Toptoh Mines, intending to use her as bait to lure Ganache. With her powers, Olive peered into Candy's heart and finally understood Ganache's end goal: to fuse with the king of enigmas. Just as Candy had anticipated, Ganache and Cabernet hurried past Abos Village and through the Brownie Cavern, arriving at the mines entrance themselves. There, Ganache severed his friendship with Cabernet, saying he, Olive, and Candy served no purpose on his journey to fuse with the enigma king. Although Cabernet exclaimed the students were strong without the enigmas' power, Ganache uttered that he was still emotionally weak, unable to reconcile with his own despair.
In the depths of Toptoh Mines, the students and Madeleine saw Ganache's group near a portal to the Abyssal Realm, the plane of death and reincarnation. Candy announced Ganache's plans to fuse with the enigma king Kerendu, to which Olive expressed her concern over Candy's change in behavior. Although the students worried the two may never return from the Abyssal Realm, Madeleine allowed them to go, not wanting to impede on their free will. As Ganache and Candy stepped into the portal, Cabernet attempted to chase after his best friend, but was held back out of fear that Candy would kill him. Back aboard the magic bus, Cabernet and his classmates deduced that the monster that Biscotti sealed away was actually Vanilla, whose heart had been consumed by an enigma three years ago. After finally piecing together Biscotti's intentions and the history of Will-o'-Wisp Academy, Pistachio wondered why Candy was so content on tagging along with Ganache. Olive chimed in, revealing that an enigma possessed Candy's heart when they were attacked earlier.
Atop The Great Rock in the Abyssal Realm, Ganache asked if Candy was willing to see his journey through to the end, even if he were to lose himself. He noted that Candy had started to act strange, which infuriated her, since she had been trying to reinvent her identity due to feeling discontent with herself. This made Ganache recall Vanilla's drastic change in behavior, wondering if he could have done something to save her from going insane. Vowing to stay strong, Candy agreed to follow Ganache to the depths of the land and bring his goals to fruition. Later on, the two obtained a dark veil from a mudman in May Village, which they could use to pass through the Abyssal Corridor. Candy suddenly conveyed her desire to kill Ganache, and confessed to feeling violent rage ever since blacking out in the Enigma Forest. Ganache promised that once he fused with Kerendu, he and Candy could fight, once again reminding him of Vanilla's descent into madness. He told Candy that he did not care about getting killed, but warned her of the dire consequences that may follow. However, knowing she was desperate to outshine him, he told her what she must do to be victorious.
Trekking through the Earth of Darkness, Candy sensed the protagonist and the class were on their tail, urging Ganache to keep going while she stayed behind. By the time the students caught up, Candy's heart and body were overtaken by Equillekrew, who had possessed her in the Dark Realm. Luckily, through Olive's words, Candy was able to de-fuse with Equillekrew and banish him into the void, though she lost all her magic abilities as a result. They brought her back to the magic bus momentarily, where she explained that even without magic, she could see all sorts of things in her mind.
The students proceeded down Drazzig Grotto and caught up to Ganache, who was face-to-face with Kerendu in a bizarre form. Madeleine rushed in and warned Ganache against enigma fusion, hoping they could save Vanilla in similar vain to Candy. Ganache called his teacher's bluff, as Olive told him that she was actually possessed by several enigmas. Madeleine explained how the students were bound to encounter the enigmas eventually, detailing their history with Will-o'-Wisp Academy and Biscotti's motives. Ganache retorted, stating he would bend all the enigma-possessed magicians to his whim, and that he would be better off dead without power. His classmates proceeded to express their emotions, with Candy stating he was fated to set Vanilla free from Chiboust Castle. Although the students words were enough to deter Ganache from joining Kerendu, their fusion had already commenced, so his classmates fought back and interrupted the process.
As Kerendu escaped into the Hall of Rebirth, Miss Madeleine informed her students that three centuries ago, Kerendu lost a battle against Biscotti and lost all prestige as the enigma king, which spurred him to deliberately die and reincarnate to obtain a more powerful form. Ganache added that Kerendu must be defeated, as not even an enigma could reincarnate if it died in the Abyssal Realm. He also mentioned that by imagining himself as Kerendu's host, he could control the weaker enigmas and the enigma-possessed.[a] Just then, Madeleine told Ganache that his partial fusion with Kerendu drained him of magic. Although disappointed by this revelation, Ganache assured the protagonist that he could still believe in his classmates.
Surely enough, the students were able to vanquish Kerendu in his strongest form, casting him into oblivion. Before returning to Drazzig Grotto, Madeleine told Ganache that Biscotti was actually vessel for the previous enigma king, Yuvick, which he used to ward Kerendu out of the Material Realm long ago. She also confessed to lying about being a vessel herself, having never once fused with an enigma. Ganache then angrily demanded that everyone warp back to the surface, to his classmates' confusion. On the magic bus, Ganache expressed a thrilling sensation despite having no magic left, when his vision suddenly faded to white. He awoke in Will-o'-Wisp's meditation room, his soul standing next to Biscotti, who informed him that he could travel anywhere by attuning his body and consciousness. With his heart liberated and his mind no longer astray, Ganache had finally found the path of freedom.
Return to the Kingdom
Upon returning to the Material Realm, rumors spread amongst enigma-possessed magicians that Ganache had become Kerendu's vessel. In the span of half a year, Ganache, Candy, and the enigma-possessed joined forces and founded the Biscotti Sect, eventually seizing control over Kovomaka Kingdom. Word soon reached Vanilla in Chiboust Castle, but when Ganache arrived to visit her, he claimed that he was happy despite losing everything. Vanilla was freed from her restraints as she broke down in tears, and she too abandoned magic and joined the Biscotti Sect. Thus, the kingdom welcomed an era of peace that would last for 200 years.
Magical Starsign
In Chocomilk Caves on Shadra, the party could talk to a boy named Diecast, who asked if they were from Kovomaka. If they answered "No", Diecast named Kovomakan magicians who earned it the title of the magic planet, two of whom were Ganache and Vanilla.[3] The character Carbon also bore a striking resemblance to Ganache, both in his appearance and familiarity with Miss Madeleine.
Trivia
- His favorite food is ebifurya, big shrimp battered in breadcrumbs and fried in oil. He used to eat it with a mix of mayonnaise and ketchup until Lemon said it gave him "commoner smell," so he now eats it with only mayonnaise.[4]
- According to the game's scenario writer, Nobuyuki Inoue, Ganache was supposed to die at the end of the game, taking inspiration from Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones. However, Inoue decided against it after hearing the songs Tsukasa Masuko had composed for the final scenes.[5]
- During Magical Vacation, Ganache and Vanilla are the only users of dark magic at Will-o'-Wisp Academy.
- It is possible that the purple turban in Magical Starsign, an equipment piece exclusive to the dark-aligned protagonist, is meant to reference Ganache. It should be noted, however, that Pistachio refers to Ganache's clothing as a "black hood" (黒いフード kuroi fūdo), while the purple turban is called such in both English and Japanese (むらさきターバン murasaki tāban).
Nomenclature
His name comes from ganache, a blend of chocolate and cream used for pastry filling.
