Rogan Josh is a character in Magical Starsign. He is a powerful magician from Erd and a member of the yogart guru tribe.

Profile

Rogan Josh is a thin tan-skinned man with red eyes, a bindi on his forehead, and gold hoop earrings. He wears a turban made of gray fabric with a blue cloth in the middle, all of which are connected to a red jewel above his forehead. For clothing, Rogan Josh dons a gray toga and red armlets, and his ankles are covered by blue bandages. He moves around by crossing his legs and levitating.

Biography

Early life

Rogan Josh was born to the yogart gurus, a tribe of ascetic magicians from Erd who could freely control their physical and spiritual bodies, or chi, and astral project their souls to Nova inside the sun. At some point, he studied at Ambergris Preparatory School on Cassia to learn the esoteric teachings of Craaken, and became one of the top seventy-five best magicians in the galaxy. After Craaken was crucified, he met Kale, a fellow magician and Ambergris Prep graduate, outside Erd's Kahve Ruins. Kale wanted to reach Nova in his physical body, recounting how the ruins were designed ages ago by Craaken, who opened Ambergris Prep after the war between the brownies and Espresso civilization. Having read from Craaken's Book of the Darned, Kale aimed to cause the sun's death and rebirth, which would destroy the universe and start it anew.

As the students of Will-o'-Wisp Academy chased Sorbet down Shishkebab Cavern on Razen, they were halted when she passed through a lever-powered doorway. They noticed Rogan Josh hiding in a nearby barrel, who introduced himself as a practitioner of yogart, and offered to help them out. He used his powers to slip through the doorway and push the lever, allowing the students to progress. Within the cavern, they found prison cells containing magicians who were abducted by the astro pirates. Rogan advised they take the prison keys from Gil Mudflap of the Space Police, and further in the cave, they spotted Detective Beignet. He explained that during the confrontation with Chard at Nata de Coco Door, he realized the Space Police and astro pirates were secretly working together, to which Chard had him arrested.

Before the students could follow Sorbet to the Stone Stage, they were intercepted by Gil Mudflap and his troopers. They managed to defeat them, to which Mudflap ran away and dropped his keys. Rogan rushed over to take them, and told the protagonist about the door of light/darkness that led to the Stone Stage, suggesting they open it with light/dark wild magic. He noted how the door had never been opened; Sorbet used Celadon's magic to warp to the other side, while Kale passed through using a special warping device. While Rogan left to release some of the captive magicians, Kale activated the Stone Stage, teleporting himself, Chard, Miss Madeleine, and their band of enigmas and pirate otters into the sun. Luckily, Celadon protected the students by casting a barrier around them. Beignet arrived afterwards with Rogan, escorting the students and Celadon back to Paella.

At the Pot-Pot Inn, Rogan informed the students that Kale departed for the light planet Nova, which not only existed inside the sun, but in a different dimensional space. Since the students could not go to Nova in spirit like the yogart gurus, or warp there using the Stone Stage, they had to travel there by rocket. Such a path was written in the Book of the Darned, but Rogan knew the students would not be able to understand it. Instead, he told them to learn more from the dwarves on Cassia.

After finding the fire millennium gummy inside Capsicum Caverns, the students returned to Paella in time for the Starfall Festival. Rogan participated, informing the team that the Space Police returned to Cassia, then invited them to watch the potfolk's ritual. Later on at the inn, he told them about the unique properties of the five millennium gummies that rested on each planet, recommending they bring the fire gummy to Grenadine in Macaroon. Rogan also brought up Grenadine's theory that the universe was actually an immaterial consciousness, born and nurtured by the minds of people, and implied Grenadine had read from the Book of the Darned.

Trivia

• Although Rogan Josh is never seen casting magic, he is among the top 75 strongest magicians in the Baklava system according to Grenadine. His starsign, however, is unspecified.

Nomenclature

His name comes from rogan josh, a Kashmiri red meat curry flavored with roots and chili.
