The Espresso civilization were a group who lived prior to Magical Starsign. Originally from Puffoon, they colonized Erd to experiment on robotic artificial intelligence, but were wiped out by their own creations and faded from history.

History
Roughly 12,800 years before Magical Starsign, the Espresso civilization flew from Puffoon to Erd under the leadership of Dr. Calzone. His main interest was Nova, a planet said to exist inside the sun of the Baklava system. Since yogart gurus on Erd could visit Nova in spirit, Calzone and the Espressos expected Erd to have a gate of some sort, but their efforts were for naught. Instead, the Espressos joined forces with the archmagician Craaken to construct the Kahve plant where several test robots were manufactured. These self-sufficient robots operated on the AI program Ribbit Ribbit α (Alpha),[1] powered by artificial gummies created in Kahve.[2] The gummies were generated from the crystallization of light and dark magic particles that nucleated around living organisms, acting as the main fuel source for the robots' battery cores.
Around the time of Ribbit Ribbit α's production, Calzone invited Applepie to Erd in order to train her psychic powers. After undergoing several PSI amplification experiments, Applepie gained the ability to twist the fabric of space, which Calzone's team planned to replicate in the upcoming version of Ribbit Ribbit. The Espressos also built the town of Rio Villa while these experiments took place, and opened a bustling spaceport where space shuttles imported water from Cassia.[3]
Some time later, after droves of technicians and psychics were brought to the earth planet, a test version of Ribbit Ribbit β (Beta) was completed and installed in a new line of robots.[4] While the technicians intended for the Beta program to make its robots more emotionally responsive, its development was rushed as the Alpha robots grew increasingly out of control, resulting in the omission of complex personality traits such as "nihil" and "cool."[5] On the other hand, robots operating on Ribbit Ribbit β had the power to twist space, replicated from the PSI amplification tests performed on the psychics, which could tear through space and allow passage into the sun. Before Ribbit Ribbit β could be completed, however, the Espressos came into conflict with the brownies. They received five warnings until war broke out, in which the brownies and stone giants took over Kahve. The robots also went haywire and turned against their creators, invading the factory and gummifying the Espressos for fuel. By the time the war ended, all that remained of the civilization were their structures, robots, and the Emerald Core computer, whose database preserved information on the robots and Applepie's digitized diary. Calzone possibly escaped to Puffoon, where his bloodline would continue until Torta Sammich.[a]

- ↑ Calzone's Japanese name is トルタ・トーミ Toruta Tōmi, from ミートタルト mītotaruto (meat tart), while Torta Sammich's is トルタ・リーベ Toruta Rībe, from ベリータルト berītaruto (berry tart), implying some sort of kinship. This may also explain why Applepie was unable to call Calzone during the robots' attack, as he had likely retreated to Puffoon before the war against the brownies.
