Café au Lait Rustynail is a party member in Magical Vacation. An ancient machine created thousands of years ago, he is a student at Will-o'-Wisp Academy who uses the ancient spirit. After enigmas attack at Valencia Beach and bring everyone to the Light Plane, Café au Lait refuses to be used as parts for the magic bus and runs off. He is found by dwarves, who rebuild him into an oven and sell him to Parmesan in the Tower of La'Roche. Once the protagonist's group rescues him, he gets used to being retooled by Balsamico and Miss Madeleine.
Profile
Café au Lait is known for his dry and clever sense of humor, but is also a quick and logical thinker among his classmates. He is also shown to be quite philosophical, questioning the nature of the world during moments of peace. Although Café au Lait tries to act brave, he gets scared quite easily and is deathly afraid of being mechanically retooled. His hobby is traveling, and his favorite food is hitsumabushi, grilled eel on rice.[2] In Japanese, his dialogue is written in wonky lettering known as Café au Lait Font (
) and exclusively uses the Katakana script.
He is composed of a rusted ultrametal called karuikane (カルイカネ),[3][a] a material that makes him surprisingly lightweight, and has many screws around his body. There are exactly six small ones and two large ones on his chest, and five on his head. He also has a few sectioned parts where joints are, like on his legs and feet. He has three digits on each hand, each composed of three silver joints and attached to a gray metal socket on each palm. Café au Lait has one orange eye that rests on his bucket-shaped head. On his head are three brass funnels, and he carries two tanks on his back. Beneath his head, he has a mouth-like hatch[4] that reveals a digestive apparatus when opened up.[5] Yellow markings glow on his body when he casts magic.

Biography
Early life
Café au Lait was built around 12,000 years ago[6] by a powerful ancient civilization, and was equipped with a prototype artificial intelligence program titled Ribbit Ribbit β (Beta). Succeeding to Ribbit Ribbit α (Alpha), the Beta version was designed to give Café au Lait and similar robots complex emotions such as nihilism and coolness. Development on Beta was handled by five people at first, but half way through, more technicians were called over as the negligent Alpha robots grew increasingly out of control. The technicians hastily worked on the Beta program using human wave tactics, and as a result, they failed to implement complex personality traits in time. The Alpha robots eventually went haywire and annihilated the ancient civilization, while Ribbit Ribbit β was declared an unreleased AI that faded into obscurity.
20 years before Magical Vacation, while digging in Zundoko Pit on the Dark Plane, Bruschetta and his team of dwarves excavated Café au Lait from the underground temple Garam Masala.[7] The dwarves went bankrupt shortly after, paying off their debt by selling Café au Lait and their digging equipment to a curiosity shop. Principal Biscotti discovered Café au Lait, and upon noticing that he had Ribbit Ribbit β installed, he erupted into a dance and purchased him for 200 bira. The sight of Biscotti's dancing brought Café au Lait to tears.[8] Café au Lait was then enrolled in Will-o'-Wisp Academy, where Biscotti taught him magic.[9]

After Magical Vacation
Sesame, who became a researcher on ancient technology, ran Café au Lait under several modifications and experiments. Café au Lait final modification was a rocket, and he was launched from Valencia Beach into outer space. Since then, his whereabouts have remained unknown.[10]

Café au Lait Fight

In 2006, he starred in a Flash game called Café au Lait Fight on Brownie Brown's now-defunct website, br2.co.jp. It was a shooting game where Café au Lait was guided by the player's cursor. To defeat enemies, he used ancient magic that could be buffed by summoning spirits. However, because of his limited HP and MP, the player needed to direct him towards special healing characters periodically. After the discontinuation of Flash and br2.co.jp, very little footage of this game was archived.
Trivia
- In an interview with Nintendo Online Magazine, director Nobuyuki Inoue stated that Café au Lait and Chocolat Cracks were designed to be gender ambiguous.[11] Although Chocolat's in-game profile lists him as male, Café au Lait is listed as "?", but he tends to use the masculine personal pronoun オレ ore.
Nomenclature
His comes from café au lait (pronounced ka-fay oh lay), meaning "coffee with milk" in French.
