Chard is a boss character in Magical Starsign. He is the king of the astro pirates and the top disciple of Master Kale.

Profile

Chard is shown to be prideful and serious. He speaks in a somewhat poetic manner, presenting a dramatic streak in his behavior. He is frequently shown to flaunt his entrances via leaping off of high structures. Instances of this include his first boss encounter atop the freezing machine and his second encounter atop Nata de Coco Door. He avoids displays of vulnerability, dismissing concerns over his condition despite harboring visibly injuries. Despite his egoistical attitude, he holds little value in his own life. He holds Kale in high regard, remaining deeply loyal to him despite recognizing that he is being used. He is shown to be drawn to Kale's ideology, willingly risking his life for his plans.

He has curly white hair with pink tips, and the rest of his head is mostly obscured by a red bird-shaped mask, which has colorful sphere-shaped lenses, four symmetrical tusks, making it resemble Balinese garuda and leak masks. It also features blue eyelash pieces, several yellow points, and five triangular parts around the base. The only distinguishable part of Chard's face is his fair-skinned jaw and pink lips. For clothing, he wears a green sleeveless vest, a purple shirt wrapped in red cloth which loops over his shoulders, and a purple cloth tied over his midriff. Below the purple cloth is eight long strips of green fabric made from the same material as his vest. The fabric strips are topped with purple triangles, and below his abdomen is a yellow straw-like covering. His pants are purple like his shirt, and he wears green boots with red frills on the insteps. Chard is also equipped with green gloves that have red cuffs.

Chard learns about the students' arrival

As the protagonist and Lassi sailed Neumann through the frigid waters of Cassia, Chard and a quartet of pirate otters operated a strange machine within the Great Dragon Road. Dumpy Dave ran in to alert Chard of the magic rocket's arrival, assuming it may cause trouble for them. Chard asked if it was a Space Police rocket, but Dave told him it did not look like one of their rockets. Chard, reassured, told him that there was nothing to worry about and turned back to the machine.

The students battling Chard at Great Dragon Road

After the students reunited with Mokka, Caldarroste revealed to them the location of the pirates' hideout. The three of them entered and fended off against Chard's underlings, eventually reaching the chamber where Chard and his freezing machine were located, though Chard was nowhere to be seen. The party met Keelhaulin' Kurt, Dumpy Dave, and Craaaaaazy Chris, to which a battle ensued. Once the party defeated the three otters, Chard appeared perched atop the machine, claiming to sense great magical power within them. Lassi pointed him out, and he ordered the students to show him their power before dramatically leaping into battle. Upon being defeated, Chard congratulated the students, then revealed that Caldarroste had lured them to the hidehout, to Caldarroste's delight. Caldarroste asked him if he could become a pirate, but before Chard could answer, he fell to his knees in pain. Kurt questioned him, but Chard insisted he was fine, muttering the wounds Madeleine inflicted on him have not healed yet. He then commanded the otters to flee the cave and freeze it solid along with the students. Luckily, the students managed to escape.

Later on Razen, three pirates rushed in to the Stone Stage in Shishkebab Cavern, where Kale was present. Feral Darryl reported to Kale that Chard had been defeated by a group of wizards, which somewhat astounded Kale. Feral Darryl then assured him that, fortunately, Chard's life was not in danger. Kale chuckled to himself, noting at how things were getting interesting and advising the students be kept at bay.

In a quest to find the aquarino so they could fly through Razen's atmosphere, the students returned to Pescato, only to find the town locked by the Space Police. With the help of Detective Beignet, the party reached Nata de Coco Door, where they spot three pirates slashing at the vines blocking the cavern. Lassi pointed them out, and Beignet rushed onto the scene. Chard, atop of the door, stated that he knew the party would come, claiming it was all a part of Kale's plan. He explained Kale ordered him and his pirates to snatch the aquarino from the party, but Chard decided it would be quicker to dispose of them instead. Beignet threatened him to stop and declared he was calling for backup, but Chard dismissed him, prioritizing the fight against the party.

Chard lost again, to which Beignet returned with three space troopers, one of whom suspiciously addressing Chard as "Master Chard." The trooper corrected himself, calling attention to Chard's arrest. All four space policemen cornered Chard as one of them ordered reinforcements from Pescato, requesting an armored cruiser to arrest him. The cruiser arrived and lowered a ladder, but Chard himself grabbed hold of it and flew away. The party succeeded in acquiring the aquarino, while Chard took refuge in the Frog Pot surrounded by five space troopers. As the troopers checked in on Chard's condition, he expressed his anger towards Beignet's continuous prying and demanded his arrest.

Chard was later seen beside Kale, looking after the unconscious Madeleine at the Stone Stage in Shishkebab Cavern. He noticed Sorbet walking up to the stage and moved to stand directly in front of her. Kale turned to see what was happening behind him, prompting Chard to return to his side so he could address the water mage. Sorbet, with Celadon in her clutches, informed Kale that she had brought Celadon as a sacrifice. Chard dismissively referred to Celadon as a mere pot, but Sorbet insisted that it might be a decent magician since it created Paella's barrier. Chard questioned Kale, who responded that potfolk were of little use to him. Sorbet tried to insist further, but was interrupted when her classmates arrived. Chard scoffed, realizing how Mudflap had failed to ward off the students. Sorbet asked them why they followed her, but Chard interrupted, praising the party for their impeccable timing. He compared them to summer bugs flying to a flame as his crew prepared to warp off, then invited them to join him on the pirates' trip to hell.

Pico pointed out that Chard was a pirate, to which Chard agreed, adding that he was the leader of the pirate otters and the top disciple of Master Kale, declaring his own name with pride. Lassi angrily demanded that Chard let go of Madeleine, but he instead commanded Sorbet to hold the party off until Kale's teleportation spell activated, stressing that it was necessary for her to prove her loyalty. However, Sorbet stood silent, with Pico asking her why she even needed to think about whether or not she should hurt her friends. Losing patience, Chard told her to get it over with or he would dispose of her as well. Sorbet still did not respond, so Chard kicked her off the stage. Kale told him to leave her be, as the spell was complete and the party would also be sent to Nova, the light planet. With that, Chard returned to Kale's side. But before the spell could finally warp them all, Celadon made a barrier that protected the party.

At the entrance of Chromagar Cave on Shadra, Chard and Caldarroste awaited the students' arrival. Chard introduced himself yet again as the pirate king and Kale’s top disciple, while Caldarroste introduced himself as Chard's right-hand man. Chard claimed that on Shadra, he could unleash his true power. Caldarroste chuckled at the party for bringing Mokka along with them even after he was sabotaged in Sparklin Palace, but Chard told him there was no need to think about that, because he would destroy them all in an instant. However, despite his bold claim, Chard was defeated.

Falling to his knees, Chard boasted how Kale had been arranging the dance between him and them, from their arrival to his own defeat. He explained that everything was accounted for, profoundly saying that it was simply Kale's nature. Noticing Knucklestorm's imminent arrival, he chuckles and claimed he was sure that Knucklestorm would come, muttering how everything has gone according to Kale's plan, from his encounters with the students, to how they hardly understood what he was talking about. Just before Knucklestorm arrived, Chard shouted that every last thing was exactly as Kale had predicted before blowing himself up, nearly knocking the students and Caldarroste unconscious, ending his own life.

• When creating Chard, Shinichi Kameoka was asked by Nobuyuki Inoue to base him off Berg Katse, a villain from the 1972 anime series Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. His hairstyle was inspired by the character Takashi Andō, portrayed by Yōsuke Kubozuka, from the TV adaptation of Ikebukuro West Gate Park.
• Chard’s first encounter on Great Dragon Road serves as the first instance that could potentially trigger additional dialogue between the party if he casts celestial swap in battle.
