Will-o'-Wisp Academy, also known as the Magic Academy, is a location in the Magical Vacation series. Established and managed by Principal Biscotti on the Material Plane, it is a school of magic found in Kovomaka Kingdom at the edge of a continent[1] on the planet Kovomaka.
The academy hosts over 6000 students[2] and 120 faculty members.[3] It operates similar to a real-life college, as there are no grade levels,[4] and students of all ages can enroll and are eligible to graduate at any time if they pass a graduation exam, which consists of a written report and a practical skill demonstration.[5] As for classes, students choose the lectures they want to attend and can receive academic guidance from designated homeroom teachers. The cast of Magical Starsign, for example, is enrolled in Low Class B[6] with Miss Madeleine as their homeroom teacher.
Since its founding 300 years before Magical Vacation, many graduates of Will-o'-Wisp Academy have gone on to hold important positions in Kovomaka Kingdom, becoming the pillars of its magic-centric political and cultural development.[1] Biscotti's real rationale for teaching magic, however, is to help students learn all that there is about the world and discover the path of freedom.[7]

History
300 years before Magical Vacation, Will-o'-Wisp Academy was founded in Kovomaka Kingdom on the edge of the continent by the archmagician Biscotti, who fused with the enigma king Yūvekku to bring magic to the Material Plane.[8] Despite already being incredibly powerful, Biscotti was inspired by the enigmas' mysterious techniques.[9] He aimed to promulgate the secrets of magic across the world, while taking measures to keep his students away from the enigmas. Kerurendu took control of the enigmas around the same time and and launched an attack on Kovomaka Kingdom, but after he was defeated by Biscotti, he promised to never interfere with the Material Plane.[10]
For generations, Will-o'-Wisp fostered talented sorcerers who became the pillars of Kovomaka's rapid political and cultural evolution. However, one in five graduates would end up fusing with enigmas[11] as their innocence was lost to the workings of society,[12] and they engulfed the kingdom in a war that lasted for three days.[13] The conflict and those involved were kept secret from the public, who were only told that countless saints and soldiers had died in accidents related to magical experiments. Once the war ended, Kovomaka Kingdom returned to a state of peace, but the extent of the damage it had suffered forced Biscotti to reconsider. Rather than distancing his students from enigmas, Biscotti chose to give them the opportunity to confront enigmas at the Valencia Beach Seaside School while their hearts were still pure.[14] Those with strong hearts could control the enigmas' abilities and still be in touch with their own consciousness, while the rest were driven mad with power. As Biscotti's last hope, the surviving students found important positions in the kingdom and its royal army, so that they could fight on the front lines if another war broke out.

After Magical Vacation
Pistachio Maplewood graduated from the academy with a PhD and became a professor, Kirsch Pintail became an instructor after marrying Arancia Scorenote and traveling the world, and Candy Mintblue became a history lecturer. Depending on the continuity, the protagonist also supported the development of Will-o'-Wisp. If they defeated Kerurendu with their starting attribute, they joined the academy's faculty to teach magic for support, reforming the academy into a school that was suitable for the new era. If light attribute, they set out on a journey and compiled their discoveries in a book. The book was delivered to Candy and donated to the academy, where it was revered as an essential source of knowledge for magicians across Kovomaka Kingdom.

After Magical Starsign
Upon resuming their studies at the academy, the group gradually went their separate ways. Pico, who repeatedly failed all his classes, dropped out of Will-o'-Wisp in the spring of his eighth year to explore the galaxy. Sorbet remained at the academy as a scholarship student, and after graduating, enlisted in the Space Police to conduct an organizational reform with Brie Pourri and General Knucklestorm. Lassi spent 10 years studying the mechanics of rockets, persisting even in the face of public ridicule, until Mokka volunteered to be rebuilt into a rocket. The incomplete Rocket Mokka was then lent to the protagonist, who had helped the dwarves build a radio telescope out of the Kahve Ruins on Erd. The radio telescope picked up a faint signal in outer space, and on the day the protagonist prepared to blast off aboard Rocket Mokka, Chai stowed away between the fuel tank and main engine.[a]
Trivia
- Although senior students are mentioned by Sorbet and Pico in the beginning of Magical Starsign,[15] which seems to contradict lore established in Magical Vacation, it is actually an embellishment added to the English and European localizations. In the original Japanese dialogue, there is no mention of seniors, nor a necromancy lab which Pico also brings up.[16]
- There is, however, a science lab where the body parts of Gyuuhi Ogura are said to be contained.[17]
- During the events of Magical Vacation, the protagonist, Pistachio, and Candy live in the academy's dormitories.
- The academy has a male cheerleading team who appear at sports festivals. Pico is dressed in the clothes worn by this team.[18]
- Will-o'-Wisp Academy was originally going to be located next to a city named Academy City (学園都市), but it was cut from the final game.[19] This concept was likely repurposed for Castle Town, first mentioned by Cassis and later featured in Uchū no Kishi.
- While the academy's interior and exterior are different between the two games, the geography appears to have changed as well. In Magical Vacation, it is built on a cliffside, whereas in Magical Starsign, it is in the middle of a plain and neighbors a village, possibly Castle Town.
- In Magical Vacation, there is a framed picture with the word 友情 yūjō (friendship) in the east wing. Similarly in Magical Starsign, the door to the meditation room and the tapestry within it has the word 禅 zen.
- The files of Magical Starsign contain areas of Will-o'-Wisp that are not seen in the final game. These areas are a Library (魔法学校・図書室), Music Room (魔法学校・音楽室), Principal's Office (魔法学校・校長室), and Hidden Classroom (魔法学校・かくし部屋).
- In both games, Will-o'-Wisp's theme is the only song that uses a 5/8 time signature.
- Mokka's Spirit Battle in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is set in the Great Plateau Tower stage, which features Hyrule Castle in the background, likely referencing the palatial appearance of Will-o'-Wisp.
Nomenclature
Its name comes from will o' the wisp, ghostly lights in English folklore said to be seen by travelers at night.
