―Demar

Abalon Demar is a boss character in Magical Starsign. He is the chief of the Bena Rikashi Space Police, and the older brother of superintendent Gil Mudflap.

Profile

Personality

Abalon is shown to be relentless, short-tempered, and dismissive. Taking pride in his position as chief, his dismissiveness is shown through his disinterest in his brother’s reports and his tendency to take charge. He is also shown to be negligent towards matters he deems irrelevant. This is primarily indicated via his lack of care towards the impact of releasing Magnus Muzzleflash, and his dismissal towards the lives of civilians when Gren was set aflame.

Appearance

Demar is shown standing inside of an open scallop, wearing large blue balloon pants and an orange tutu-like garment with a seashell texture, gold bangles, and as well as purple setta sandals. He has pale gray skin and an overly large pearl necklace, along with viridian straight hair that swirls into spiral shapes at its ends. He has prominent orange eyes, and he appears to be wearing orange eyeliner and green eyeshadow. He has odd orange horns coming out of his head, most likely to be corals.

Boss

Demar wields the water starsign, gaining his aura when Cassia is in phase.

He can use the spell forested field to deal damage to up to four members of the party, which has the chance to inflict cold and seal their magic. His spell ice fromage does the same, but to all party members, though is rarely used. He can also use the neutral spell celestial swap to change the alignment of planets to his advantage.

Demar possesses the unique skill sweet nothings, which strikes and charms a character, preventing them from attacking him; this status effect cannot be removed by healing items or fresh drop. His other unique skill, hello, good-bye, dispels the charm from the afflicted character while lowering their hit points to 1, then transferring the effect to another character.[1]

Biography

Magical Starsign

Abalon Demar was introduced shortly after the party infiltrated Shishkebab Cavern, in which they defeated Gil Mudflap and rescued several captive magicians. Hearing word of his brother's defeat, Demar felt as if there is no other choice and ordered that Magnus Muzzleflash, an infamous former SP soldier imprisoned for war crimes, be reinstated into the force. Mudflap barged into Demar's office and warned him about the dangers of releasing Muzzleflash, but Demar silenced him and instructed him to await his orders in Cassia. He declared that Muzzleflash would be deployed to Erd, while he himself would go to Gren. Demar then warns Mudflap that Biek Fowler would have both of them terminated if the students were not dealt with.[a]

Commencing their plan, a number of SP officers were sent to Cassia, aiming to claim the water millennium gummy from Holy Water Pyramid. They flew a spaceship overtop the pyramid and enveloped it in a column of energy, proceeding to blockade the area and lie to the locals that they were protecting the millennium gummy. Three officers blocking the pyramid await for Demar to arrive and wipe out the water people, guardians of the pyramid. After the trio policemen are defeated, Demar and Mudflap can be seen flying into the second floor of the pyramid. The party managed to break through the police's defenses and destroy their ship. Upon reaching the second floor, they discovered the corpses of the water people and a half-conscious Parfait. Parfait revealed to the party that it was Demar who massacred the water people.

In the water millennium gummy's chamber, Demar was fascinated by the gummy when another officer asked what would happen if the kids get their hands on it. Mudflap butted in, claiming that the children would never be able to obtain it, let alone stop Master Kale. Demar reassured him that Master Kale had nothing to worry about, as Biek Fowler was keeping an eye on them. When Mudflap spotted the party entering the chamber, Demar was surprised to find that the entire party actually consisted of children and angrily questioned Mudflap's inability to eliminate them. Mudflap insisted on fighting them again, but Demar, irritated, sliced his brother's glider off his head. As a result, Mudflap's foul odor filled the room even more. Unable to tolerate his brother's stench any longer, Demar invited the students to fight him outside instead, threatening to slice them into pieces. He ultimately lost and was knocked unconscious, to Mudflap's dismay, which led the occupant SP officers to abandon their mission and flee the pyramid.

Later on, the students ventured to Gren at Detective Beignet's behest, quickly finding Demar looking out to Carbonara Jungle engulfed in flames. He told them he had been informed that Gren never had a wood millennium gummy, as it was supposedly absorbed by the Holy Tree Yggsalad. He had come to Gren to see it for himself but saw the fire instead. Believing that the gummy would soon be incinerated alongside Yggsalad, Demar bid the students farewell and flew away in his glider.[b]

Trivia

  • In the original Japanese version of the game, Demar has three voice lines that were removed overseas. These are "I'll take it from here!" (受け止めてあげよう Uketomete ageyō) at the start of battle, "It's you~!" (君だ Kimi da) when using sweet nothings, and "No way!" (そんな Son'na) when defeated.
  • In the original Japanese version, none of the characters or NPCs refer to Demar as creepy or "a weirdo," with such traits being unique to the English localization.
  • Demar is seen wielding a rapier in Holy Water Pyramid, but does not use it in battle even though he threatened to slash the party with it.
  • He appears to be left-handed, as he is the only sword-wielding character who consistently holds his sword in his left hand in his sprites.
  • His fate after the events of Magical Starsign remains unknown. It is unclear whether he was eventually fired after failing to stop the party, since Biek Fowler died shortly thereafter.
  • Out of all the Space Police villains, he committed the worst crimes; mass slaughter and causing an entire species to go extinct.

Nomenclature

His name comes from abalone, small spiral shelled mollusks. Demar is a surname derived from Old French, meaning "marsh."

Notes

  1. In Japanese, Demar explicitly states that Fowler would have him and Mudflap fired from the Space Police; in the English localization, he says they would be in for a "terrible slapping."
  2. Depending on the order in which the player gathers the millennium gummies, this event may take place before the events in Holy Water Pyramid, albeit with a minor dialogue changes.
