Mahō no Natsuyasumi: the magical vacation was the working title of Magical Vacation during its development. Concept artwork and information about this version of the game was shared on Brownie Brown's former website, br2.co.jp, in the MagiVaca Gallery.

History

Development

The game's plot development summary, with monsters illustrated by Satoshi Matsuura

From what was documented in the MagiVaca Gallery, this early proposal was drafted before Brownie Brown had its own office, and staff members held planning meetings at family restaurants. Director Nobuyuki Inoue claimed the title expressed something akin to the soul's cry for a break. It also jokingly referred to him being unable to go on vacation, wanting to visit a tropical resort under the guise of gathering references for the game.

Shinichi Kameoka confirmed that, while all character and monster designs were mostly unchanged from their initial drafts, the setting of Mahō no Natsuyasumi was slightly different. The party would have explored other worlds, much like the final product, but they used skateboards and cellular phones, suggesting they would have lived in a more modernistic world.

Plot

Although little is known about the plot of Mahō no Natsuyasumi, some story attributes can be gathered from concept artwork featured in the MagiVaca Gallery. The protagonists would descend through the Lower Worlds (下の世界) in search of their missing teacher, and cross paths with three other parties: Graybow (グレイバウ) and his underling Irvine (アーバイン), Ericson (エリクソン) who seeks the Ankh of Moria (モリアのアンク), and Aranciata (アランシアタ) who obtained the Ankh of Ushu (ウシュのアンク).

The missing teacher plot point was presumably repurposed for Magical Starsign, which sees the main party traveling across planets to find Miss Madeleine.

Gameplay

Tackle, a prototype version of the male protagonist

The player character of Mahō no Natsuyasumi could either be a boy or a girl; depending on which gender was chosen, the opposite gender would appear as a party member with a designated attribute, and act as the player character's boyfriend/girlfriend. The male character, a 15-year-old named Tackle (タックル), is described as having a tender heart, but often clashes with his friends due to his difficulty expressing his emotions. As a party member, he would have possessed the wind attribute. Tackle's design was repurposed for the male protagonist of Magical Vacation, also known as Mash. It is unknown whether spirits were an established mechanic at this time.
