"Heh-heh-heh... An enigma was but one of my previous incarnations... I have regenerated many times over..."
―Kerendu

Kerendu, known in Japan as Kelrendu, is the final boss of Magical Vacation, fought in Drazzig Grotto, and a second time in the Revival Chamber in the Abyssal Realm. A long time ago, he was the king of the enigma clan.

Profile[edit | edit source]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Kerendu is a malicious, vengeful being who craves power and prestige.[1]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Kerendu takes on two different appearances in Magical Vacation. He is first seen with a melon-like form with spotted skin and a multitude of eyes and tubes all over. He has one main eye in the middle of his body, which is used to cast black razor. Surrounding him are four disembodied hands of different elements. His final form is skeletal from the chest up, and below are dozens of yellow-purple tendrils. On his upper half, Kerendu has a pair of wings made from large jawbones, an exposed ribcage, and winged horns.[1]

Boss[edit | edit source]

Fight 1[edit | edit source]

During the first fight against Kerendu, he is positioned in the middle of the back row, with Ganache standing directly in front of him. In the left and right columns are four disembodied hands, each one specializing in a different element. The hands all the physical skill claw, while also possessing one spell of their respective element; charity hand uses angel's smile to restore an ally's HP; zappy hand uses thunderspark, a 2x2 square attack that may inflict numbness; edgy hand uses brunoise, hitting one target in the front row; gloomy hand uses marinara miasma, a 2x2 square attack that may inflict poison to chip off 20% HP each turn. Finally, Ganache uses abyssal void, call Inky, and clear spirits, all of which can put the party at a big disadvantage. If Ganache's HP hits 0 at any point during the fight, the party automatically loses.

As for Kerendu, he also uses clear spirits to make all spirits disappear. His signature spell, black razor, covers the entire field with a chance to drain 20% MP from targets. Additionally, he possesses the spell dark gas, a single-target skill that can also summon a dark spirit. He is resistant to all status ailments.[1]

Fight 2[edit | edit source]

Kerendu's second form.

In the second fight, the field is occupied by six dark-element enemies, all of whom know the clear spirits spell, with Kerendu positioned in the middle of the back row. One skulltimate dishes out strong physical attacks that can inflict poison; two plumpkins can use call Inky and abyssal void to deal heavy magic damage; two dragoyles can also use call Inky, as well as the spell dark breath to hit an entire row.

Kerendu's two unique skills from his previous fight now have upgrades versions, those being black sun in place of black razor, and dark light in place of dark gas. Dark light's accuracy is 99% regardless of a party member's agility buffs.[1]

Bestiary entry[edit | edit source]

English fan translation[edit | edit source]

The strongest enigma. It keeps aiming to be reborn stronger than before.

Japanese[edit | edit source]

現在最強のエニグマ。能力の向上を常に目指し死と生を繰り返している。

The current strongest enigma. He constantly strives to improve his abilities by cycling through death and life.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Three centuries ago, Kerendu was an underling of the enigma king Yuvick. After Yuvick agreed to fuse with Biscotti, Kerendu claimed Yuvick's throne and launched a full-scale attack on Kovomaka Kingdom. However, Biscotti was able to use Yuvick as a way to ward Kerendu's forces out of the Material Realm. This defeat was so detrimental to Kerendu's prestige that the lesser enigmas no longer saw him as their king. In hopes of reclaiming his honor, Kerendu allowed himself to continuously die and reincarnate in order to attain a more powerful form, and eventually collapse the Material Realm from within.

At some point before the students' adventure, Kerendu clashed with Equillekrew and deliberately lost.[2] As Kerendu departed for the Abyssal Realm to be reborn yet again, Equillekrew unleashed a swarm of enigmas to abduct the students from Valencia Beach and warp them to the Light Realm. Their teacher, Miss Madeleine, was sent to the Dark Realm where she confronted Equillekrew, demanding to meet Kerendu face-to-face. Surprised to know that a human knew of their former king, Equillekrew proclaimed Kerendu was no more, and that his plan was to turn the reborn enigmas into a hivemind. Madeleine taunted Equillekrew and warped off, to which he ordered the weaker enigmas to bring the students to the Dark Realm.

Knights of the Universe[edit | edit source]

Kerendu being summoned by Souffle.

Although Kerendu returns in Knights of the Universe, there is little information as to why or how he appears. He was summoned by Souffle Sherbet after she cried out his name to fight back against The "Sheep", and was only seen in the last panel before the comic's discontinuation.[3]

  • In the game's files, there exist sprites for Kerendu that are never seen in-game. One is an animation of him materializing from debris, and another depicts him fallen on the ground, presumably after he is defeated.
