The Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance (NIWA) is a network of independent wikis focusing on franchises associated with Nintendo.
History
The Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance was originally founded on February 14, 2010 by Bulbapedia, Zelda Wiki, and the Super Mario Wiki, three independent wikis covering Nintendo's largest franchises. All of the wikis in NIWA are hosted independent of large wikifarm services like Fandom, and are not beholden to editorial oversight beyond their own communities. NIWA has grown to be the home of twenty-eight Nintendo-based wikis. NIWA also has German and Italian language divisions.[1]
On March 2, 2023, Kovopedia officially joined NIWA as its twenty-eighth member.[2]
Trivia
- The abbreviation "NIWA" can be read as the Japanese hiragana characters にわ niwa (rendered in kanji as 庭 niwa), meaning "garden". NIWA refers to itself as a garden of independent wikis, and includes the hiragana characters in its logo.[1]
