Special power[edit | edit source]

Cider's special power moves black-feathered sparrows in the Dark Realm and Abyssal Realm.

Profile[edit | edit source]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Cider considers himself a realist, saying whatever is on his mind with little concern for how others will feel. Even though Cider displays a lack of empathy for other peoples' feelings, his behavior is deeply rooted in childhood trauma. He wishes to help others, but his self-doubt prevents him from taking supportive action.[1]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Cider has blonde hair, a small red hat, purple eyes, and a tanned complexion. His outfit consists of a red scarf, a yellow vest with big sleeves, as well as baggy pants of the same color. Two blue satchels are looped over his shoulders, and a blue cape flows over his back. His choice of shoes is a pair of brown loafers.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Early life[edit | edit source]

Cider started drawing at the age of 2, following in his mother's footsteps. At 10, he held his first private art exhibition, wherein he was showered in praise and called a child prodigy. However, Cider frequently criticized other peoples' art, regardless of how much praise they received. He was once kicked out of a gallery for condemning the art on display. On his days off, Cider would spend hours in the studio, but never had a clear theme in mind, and his brush rarely touched the canvas. Later on, Cider began teaching his 7-year-old cousin, Souffle, how to draw. Souffle turned out to have lots of creative potential as well, but when someone came to purchase one of her works, Cider claimed it as his original creation. This was kept secret between the two of them.

At some point in Cider's life, he and his mother went to an art festival in Shandy Hills. As his mother was focused on her ice sculpture, a blizzard swept through the festival, leaving the attendants stranded and foodless for four days. Cider's mother went to look for help, but did not return, and only her son made it home after rescuers arrived the next day.

Cider and the others in the music room.

Before leaving for camp at the Valencia Beach Seaside School, Cider talked with Cassis, Olive, and Arancia in Will-o'-Wisp Academy's music room. They discussed rumors about students disappearing at Valencia Beach in previous years, though unlike his classmates, Cider was in disbelief. He argued the academy would not allow students to camp there every year if it endangered their lives. Olive attempted to use Ganache's sister Vanilla as proof of the disappearances, as she abandoned Will-o'-Wisp three years ago upon returning from camp. Cider considered going to Ganache for answers, but Cassis doubted he would open up about his family. The four students joined up with the protagonist shortly after, leaving the academy and boarding the magic bus with Cabernet.

On the drive to Valencia Beach, Cider improvised poems about the youthful freedom that was to come during the summer, saying they would be like the children who opened the doors to heaven. Lemon accused Cider of parroting another artist's words, to which he proclaimed his poem was an original work. He spent most of his time at Valencia Beach near the cabins, creating more dramatic poems of the sea and evening sun. The protagonist could invite him to adventure with them and Sesame, where they explored a pirate's cave in a secluded area of the beach. At dusk, Cider gathered antiqua coins hidden in the sand, convinced they were currency used by an ancient civilization. Suddenly, creatures called enigmas began swarming Valencia Beach, warping the students away one by one and sending them to another plane called the Light Realm. When Cider woke up in the Light Realm, he found himself with Cassis at Rekcarc Quarry. He attempted to ally with Cassis, until Chocolat cried for help in the distance, so Cassis ran off to look for him. Cider would later team up with Cabernet, Olive, Ganache, and Candy in Ufot Village. When the protagonist and their party approached Ufot Village, they saw Cider and his group walking through the mountains. A zaf lopik enigma leapt in under Equillekrew's orders to send the students to the Dark Realm, warping Cider and the other four out of the Light Realm.

After shifting into Spollacs Swamp Edge in the Dark Realm, Ganache killed the zaf lopik and advised his classmates to find Chocolat and Sesame, who were also brought to the Dark Realm moments prior. Having never been to the swamp before, Cider and Candy were skeptical, but Ganache was familiar with the area. He led the others east to Masala Chai Village, where the protagonist and Latte followed. Reaching Masala Chai, Cider opted to wait for Miss Madeleine and the protagonist's party to come rescue them. Ganache, however, told Cider that staying behind would benefit his own plans, leaving with Cabernet, Olive, and Candy in tow. Meanwhile, the party talked with Cinnamon, who informed them Ganache's group was heading for the Enigma Forest. To the party's surprise, only Cider stayed in Masala Chai. He reprimanded the others for their overzealousness in facing the enigmas, refusing to go to Enigma Forest, to which Cassis said the students could not sit around and wait for the help of grown-ups any longer. Cassis believed everything happening was predetermined by Principal Biscotti, who had faith in the students, though Cider remained unconvinced and chose to wait for someone to rescue him. Overhearing a conversation between the students and a canin, Cider learned that Cinnamon had supposedly come down with ooze fever. This meant she had to be quarantined and could not see Mace, so Mace took it upon himself to find the medicinal icy seed in Gelato Cave. Cider watched Mace take a boat to Ice Island, to which the party urged Cider to join them and follow Mace. Refusing to budge, Cider found the journey to be too risky, wishing for the party to die like his mother. Cassis tried convincing Cider that unlike he and his mother, the students were strong and did not need to wait for help, but Cider walked away.

Proceeding through Gelato Cave on Ice Island, the party eventually met up with Mace and defeated the hailcrab. After Mace stumbled out of the cave with the icy seed in hand, a dwarf called Quattro Formaggi arrived. He had taken Chocolat hostage earlier and was actually possessed by a Dab Hasnel enigma. Just as Quattro Formaggi unleashed his enigma form, he was struck with a yellow rose spell, revealed to have been cast by Cider. The enigma warped away, then Cassis asked Cider how he was feeling. Cider seemed to have come to terms with his mother's passing, but sensed someone was watching the party and feared it was Dab Hasnel. Cassis assured Cider that since Dab Hasnel was assuming the dwarf's appearance, it meant he was currently in a weak state. Cider subsequently joined the party, taking the boat back to Masala Chai Village to check on Cinnamon.

When confronting the canin guarding Cinnamon's house, Mace was still turned away despite owning the icy seed. The canin said Cinnamon's ooze fever was uncurable because she spent time with Mace in secret. Mace promised to leave the village forever, so long as Cinnamon could consume the seed in powder form. The students were then given the icy seed, entering Cinnamon's house to talk with her father Ginger. It turned out Cinnamon never had the ooze fever, and it was all a ploy by Ginger to keep Cinnamon away from Mace. Cinnamon ran out of the village, to which Ginger gave the party coins for her to trade in for bira. After giving Cinnamon the coins, she left Masala Chai in search of Mace, who was somewhere in the Dark Realm. Cider urged the students to depart as well, and set off for the felin village south of Spollacs Swamp.

Arriving in Tapioca Tea Village, the party heard from the local felins of how sparrows were blocking routes in the nearby forest, and could only be moved by canin whistling techniques. They entered the house of Musk and Cocoa, who informed them Ganache and his group had passed through the village earlier. Musk also told the students that Ganache's group learned to move sparrows from a canin youth, leaving behind a memo for them to read. According to Musk's memo, the canin resided in a cave in Muy Mot Desert, but the heat made it impossible to cross at the moment. The party took an alternate route to Ecir Thicket, reuniting with Nectar whom they met in the Light Realm. Musk and Cocoa followed them into the thicket, wherein Musk realized the dodos in Nectar's care were really people cursed by enigmas, and that he had used his fennel to kill them for their medicinal blood. Sesame was present as well, having helped Musk for saving him after the incident at Valencia Beach. Once Sesame fled Ecir Thicket, Latte suggested the party return to Musk and find out how to cross Muy Mot Desert. Although Musk was not home, the party learned that by touching rainmakers throughout the desert, they could create brief showers to prevent Latte from overheating. Doing so allowed them to reach Opopmat Cave at the desert's edge, discovering Mace hiding within. As Mace announced his plans to help the Traveling Putties in Osim Village, he explained to them the whistling technique to move sparrows. To the students' surprise, only Cider was able to whistle the correct way, though he admitted it was because he had experience herding chickens in elementary school.

Return to the Kingdom[edit | edit source]

Cider produced several paintings depicting his adventures at the Seaside School, retelling his story for future generations.[1]
